Early (Positive) "Apocalypto" Reactions!
Hello from Texas, Tomato-readers! Just because I'm down here covering the Fantastic Fest in Austin, that won't stop me from delivering the RT News! And get this: Mel Gibson showed up last night to show us what "Apocalypto" looks like!
Here's a snippet of my own reactions, as published at Cinematical.com: "I dug the flick. Quite a bit, actually. The movie takes a little getting used to -- we open with a group of hunters chasing, catching and disassembling a wild tapir -- but once we get into the heart of the story, Apocalypto turns into one of the more intriguing action/adventure epics of the past few years: A peaceful forest village is attacked and brutally ransacked by a more "civilized" group of Mayan warriors, and there is much horrific violence before the village's strongest men are captured as slaves."

"Apocalypto" (the finished version) hits theaters in early December.

dracus writes: on Sep 25 2006 09:46 AM Well, the way I figure it, those who won't like Apocalypto because they don't understand the language wouldn't understand it if it was in English. Good to see an American film maker with balls enough to make something for artistic merit. Wait a minute, he’s not an American! He comes from the same part of the world as Peter Jackson does! Well, that figures. (Reply to this) |

He lived in Australia for a while, and even made some movies there (which you've clearly heard of), but he was born here, which (legally) makes him an American. Check IMDB if you don't believe me. Oh, and I'm glad to hear that the movie's been received well. He may rub me the wrong way personally, but I'll always have a soft spot for Lethal Weapon. (Reply to this) |

I mean, talk about putting the carriage before the horse! (or tossing out the baby with the bath water LOL)Your ability (or anyone else's for that matter) to appreciate 'The Passion' and relate to the story on a personal level should not be negatively affected by a pre-existing prejudice towards that very broad group of people who define themselves as "Christians". The fact of the matter is that you don't need to be a 'Christian' to relate to the story of Christ Jesus...just a human being. A label is merely that - a label; a nametag. (Reply to this) |

Mikeal420 writes: on Sep 25 2006 03:38 PM In reply to this comment (#844941) There were NO Christians in "Passion of the Christ" Jesus was Jewish in the film, so were his disciples. Guess what holiday they are celebrating in the opening scene -PASSOVER-- Also, do you know how many of your "Pagan" beliefs are practiced by Christians- you call it the "The Winter Solstice"; they call it "Christmas", either way you all share much of the same culture, so why hate?? Landshark writes: on Sep 25 2006 04:18 PM There is supposedly a scene where they sacrifice Jews in the movie (just a joke, not AntiSemetic) (Reply to this) |

dracus writes: on Sep 25 2006 06:09 PM In reply to this comment (#844944) Yes, my mistake, Mel was born in America; the country that once gave the world Citizen Kane is now giving us Deuce Bigelow, Boss Hog and Jackass 2. I guess Mel's creativity and the quality of his movies had me thinking otherwise. (Reply to this) |

Mikeal420 writes: on Sep 25 2006 08:27 PM In reply to this comment (#844951) Comparing Deuce Bigelow and Jackass 2 is insane, Deuce Bigelow was an unimaginative film that was not funny; Jackass 2, while also silly, had a lot of creativity in it's stunts, the performers were energetic and fun to watch on screen, and it was damn funny!!
