Peter Jackson To Fuse Film, Video Games With New "Halo" Project

"Lord Of The Rings" director Peter Jackson is blasting into new technological territory, teaming with Microsoft to create a half-film, half-video game venture for the Xbox, and it all begins with a new "Halo" project!

Jackson is already serving as executive producer on the forthcoming "Halo" movie, based on the insanely popular space-war video game that launched Microsoft's Xbox franchise into vid-game stardom, and it seems now he'll go even further as he adapts "Halo" into a whole new kind of interactive experience.

Microsoft and Jackson have collaborated to launch Wingnut Interactive, a new branch of Jackson's Wingnut Films production company that will aim to create some sort of cinematic, super gaming creation that will be "not quite a game, not quite a film."

The surprise announcement came at yesterday's Microsoft gaming conference XO6 in Barcelona. According to Variety, the "Halo" project will likely be produced by original video game developer Bungie, with writing by Jackson and "LOTR" co-scripters Fran Walsh and Phillippa Boyens.

Jackson has always been a serious gamer, he can be trusted with a project like this. He was always heavily invovled in the games based on his films, and while some were great and some were definite misses, he always took the process serously.

I doubt Spielberg has yet realized the artistic potential of games like he has.

halo wars was announced at that conference. A completely separate game from halo3, halo wars is going back to what halo was originally going to be... real-time strategy!

I just hope this doesn't turn out like the Matrix movies, where the game tie-in turned out to be just a couple hours of mediocre action punctuated by star-powered voice acting and some sheisty trailer for the 3rd movie.

I guess what I'm saying is, Jackson might be a serious gamer, and a talented director, but the idea of a hybrid project with mass appeal is going to take a lot more creative thinking than he's demonstrated in any project thus far.

First off...the Halo Wars trailer looks freakin' awesome (even if its just a CGI trailer). Secondly, this whole 'not a game/not a movie' notion is interesting, but I dunno if people would bite it hard. I mean the Halo crowd will eat it up, but it's certainly uncharted waters so, the public reaction could be mixed. It kinda sounds like a long cinematic in a game that tend to get boring...but I guess it depends on what kind of interactivity they throw in.

I just hope Jackson puts as much effort (even more effort) into the movie than this game. We have Halo 3 and now Halo Wars to look forward to game wise, the movie should be his top priority until it's in the can.

Well rumor has it that Denzel Washington might play as Master Chief in this movie and I think that would be great. Plus Im pretty sure the effects of this movie would be awesome. But the story line though is still fuggy.

i wish they'd just ya know, NOT show Master Chief at all, and let the voice work be done by the guy from the game. I mean if they can get the guy who voiced Optimus Prime in the 80s cartoon to supply the voice for the transformers movie...why not Halo too?

For sure this is gonna be a sci-fi action packed movie and I think denzel is a one heck of an action star. I dont really see any down side if his the one playing the lead role of the movie. You can rarely see the face of the master chief in the game anyway.

Why would they cast Denzel as the Chief? He'd be Sarge if he was anyone.

If he's faceless in the movie, I don't see it working as well as it does in the game. His face in the game is irrelevent after all. While in a movie, we have to care about the character in order for his predicament to be compelling. We don't have to like him, but he does have to be personable. Not showing his face will make this movie suffer in the way that Doom suffered by incorporating that first person bullshit. It was stupid and cheezy. I say let the game be a game, and let the movie be a movie. And far from having any misgivings about Denzel playing Master Chief, I'm actually quite excited about it. And besides the "showing his face" concern, I've read these posts and have found absolutely no legitimate argument for why Denzel shouldn't be cast in the role.
