Whedon Confirms It: No "Serenity" Sequels
by Scott Weinberg | October 06, 2006
Discuss Article
Fanboy favorite Joss Whedon has given his supporters a whole bunch of fun stuff over the years, but it certainly looks like his "Firefly" & "Serenity" franchise is pretty much dead in the water. For now, anyway.

From IGN FilmForce: "In spite of a groundswell of grassroots support amongst its fans, "Serenity" has failed to revive the science fiction-western Firefly franchise. Even with DVD sales, the movie reportedly failed to recoup its $40 million budget. And as anyone who's seen the film knows, the exit of certain characters and the resolution of key storylines makes it difficult — or impossible — to recapture the chemistry of the excellent-but-short-lived series.

Joss Whedon himself, creator of both the TV show and the movie, broke the news to the Whedonesque.com website. He says, "There's no sequel, no secret project regarding Serenity or some such and I'm not even sure how anyone thought there was talk there."

"I've seen [Firefly actors] Nathan and Tim (and Summer and Alan) recently because they're my friends because I'm so, yeah, awesome. So let's put that to bed and smother it with a pillow."

Oh well, at least we got a movie out of the deal. A good one, too.

Sad, it was such a good movie. But at the same time it was a good send off for the short lived series. I just wish we could have gotten to see more of it.

It's not too late. The fanbase is steadily building. Besides, we don't need necessarily need another big screen feature. I could settle for a lower budget tv-movie.

I've said it a thousand times, and I'll say it again...that dreck like Charmed, all the Stargate clones, and BSG are still on the air and Firefly was relagated to 16 episodes and a movie is an abomination and the biggest mistake in sci-fi history. Fox putting it on Friday nights killed the show. They are to blame. It's the biggest blunder in sci-fi TV, above NBC canceling Star Trek in 69.

With the death of Wash and Book, it would be hard to watch anymore Firefly. Rest in Peace, oh great wonderful show. You will be missed.

I guess I'm not suprised, but it is too bad. A great setting and great characters. At least we can all wallow in the knowledge that we know better than most. ;-)

Dude, you better duck. Those Firefly fanboys are CRAZY!

(P.S. Firefly rocks, but I also like Battlestar Galactica a bit more).

I got drilled by fanboys for saying Serenity was a failure but this article proves it. Only the hardcore fans of firefly went to see it, and even then, there just weren't enough! When DVD sales don't even help recoup your money back - that says A LOT.

Just because a movie is a failure due to the numbers doesn't mean it's a failure of a film. I don't know why people haven't caught on to Firefly (oh wait, SHITTY MARKETING) but it is ashame. This is destined (and already is) to be a cult classic. People are going to really catch onto it in a couple years, kinda like what happened with Futurama and Family Guy, except sadly I don't see this one being resurrected. Ya know, it was a good run, and how many 1st season cancelled shows can say they got a bitchin' movie because of the fans? As far as I know, Firefly holds that title high and proud.

Really, I'm kinda happy its not coming back. Not that I wouldn't want to see more stories with the crew, which they'll probably do in another medium like comics or somethin anyway, but it just would have been really difficult to bring the show back to what it was before it was cancelled; which I'll agree with whoever said that this show being cancelled could definately be one of the biggest sci-fi blunders of all time.

Ack, now I'm sad. Guess I'll just go watch a few episodes and have a few beers. Grieving can now officially begin. :'(

I am not sure what they mean by not recouping there $40 mil investment, with DVD sales, etcs. The movie made $39 mil worldwide on release, are you saying that it did not make $1 mil more profit with dvd sales, HBO/showtime showings, etc? i doubt it.

20 years from now, it'll be perfect remake material, complete with original actors involved. If the Firefly fanboys and girls are as serious as they seem to be, they won't mind waiting.

Or hell, they'd start writing Firefly books and marketing them to Bantam or somesuch. There's definitely a market for sci-fi reading material, since the demand on returns is so low.

When they release a better edition of the DVD in the UK, how do you expect American DVD sales to go when it's primarily a DVD-savvy fanbase that'd be buying the disc? I know dozens of people, and that's not hyperbole, who have said they're waiting for the good edition of it to get released.

It's an unfortunate situation, because a large amount of people have become fans of the franchise after the movie left theatres. It's the sort of film that's slowly being shown to friends of friends. A sequel would undoubtedly have a much bigger fanbase than the first film did, but try convincing anyone with money of that.

Personally, I'm going to keep hoping.

I'm one of those that didn't get into the series until after the movie was out of theatres. I did watch Serenity after I'd gotten through the boxset of the show, and loved every minute of both the series and the film.
I'm sad, too, that it didn't go any further than it did.

But if Whedon's saying to smother it with a pillow, guys, it's just not gonna happen.

the old fashioned....
The way for young people to keep Firefly alive is just to write fan fiction about it. Time will pass....
But for us older people we are too involved in life, politics, and the tug of war that has developed for LIFE LIBERTY AND THE PURSUIT of happiness. The politically active have shunned fan fictioners for decades as we did not help bring down America... and we are too few and too late to keep her afloat... I struggle against violations of my fourth amendment EVERDAY, as well as the same argument being a violation of the commandment against false witness. But people who are not of the commandments have NO qualms of violating them, nor the attendent fourth AMENDMENT...
And so for the young of America to make Firefly their own the way trekers did... they must write Fan fiction for decades.... and keep the show alive in their hearts and actions.... even if America is taken over by others while fans pursue their happiness... and no one asks them to participate in an event or not... that's all they had to do when I was a kid, ask for help at a REAL event... but most REAL events are businesses, not political actions AGAINST American interests. The businesses ARE American... just like the small business is Firefly, and the political actioners are Reavers! The small business is in the hearts of the fans.

Crazy much?

Anyways, i honestly believe Serenity was over rated. It was "ok" at best but there was NOTHING in that film that made it stand above any other good sci-fi movie.

And yes, Battlestar Galactica > Firefly.

And now i await everyone to yell at me. Because if i stand against Firefly/Serenity i might as well stand against god himself.
