Hugh Jackman: "Wolverine" Prequel Script is "Fantastic"

According to producer-star Hugh Jackman, David Benioff's script for "X-Men" spinoff "Wolverine" is good to go, and great to boot.

Jackman, whose magician flick "The Prestige" opens this week, talked to Comingsoon.net about "Wolverine," which is still in pre-production and scheduled for release in 2008:

"We're a year away from shooting the film and we have the script," Jackman said. "And, by the way, it is unbelievable. It's a David Benioff script. He's probably the hottest writer going around town, and he was beating down our door to write this movie. It was the most amazing thing. So, we have this fantastic script. I've got a couple of movies coming out in the next month, and I might be able to tell you who the director is by then. We're seriously into talking about it now."

"Wolverine" will be a prequel exploring the origin of Jackman's mutant "X-Men" character; plot is likely to involve Wolverine's history with the Weapon X program and his future nemesis, Sabertooth. Other characters rumored to be involved are Juggernaut, the Silver Samurai, and Lady Deathstrike.

Benioff previously wrote the screenplays for "The 25th Hour" and "Troy," and is co-writing the script for Wolfgang Peterson's "Ender's Game."

If they keep within the original X-Men vision of Bryan Singer by relying upon an intelligent plot and deep characters, this film will succeed. I hope they stay away from the X3 formula of violence and excess.

So, Wolfgang Peterson is going to embarrass himself yet again by destroying Enders Game. Spielberg would do Ender's Game justice, not that self absorbed hack.

I think Jackman is at the point in his career where he can choose wether or not to continue playing Wolverine, so if he says it is a great script, I can buy that in his opinion it is a great script-- he's not just saying that because he's deperate for people to see him play the same character for the fourth time

I kind of liked the way X3 turned out. It might not have been everybody's favourite, but parts of it had heart. It's funny how some people can tear down a movie like Wolverine years before it comes out without seeing a script or even a second of the movie. That is so lame.

Troy was the worst movie ever and it was based upon the best poem ever written. How can you screw that up? Luckily, my faith in epics will be restored with the release of Frank Miller's the 300. Plus, Hugh Jackman was in Kate and Leopold AND Van Helsing. I bet he thought those scripts were super-fantastical as well.

Yeah but Benioff also wrote the script for The 25th Hour, which was an aweeesome movie, so, we'll see. I'm leaning more towards it being bad than good though.

And X3 wasn't terrible. It wasn't amazing, but it was better than the bed stain people are making it out to be.

Jackman's a real actor offscreen, or that's the impression I get. If you smudge his transition to film and consequent X-Men obligations from the record, his choices (Scoop, Fountain, Prestige) are respectable. He's talented and smart, and if he starts persuing projects not peddled by a major studio, he could be a great screen actor.

That said, this one's pretty sketchy.

hugh better say the say the script is great because his career depend on the next xmen movies. Only hits the guy had are the x men movies. Everything else he made is flat out bombs. He needs the next x movie to revive his career or he is going to be look at as box office poison.

I can be absolutely awful, and still make over $100 million if it is marketed correctly. Elektra had a bad preview, so did Catwoman. As long as they hide how bad the movie is from the trailer, it will be fine box office wise. After that, they can laugh at us for seeing it, then not make any more.

...........however Wolverine does. If it is indeed the Weapon X storyline, then that means Sabretooth, Gen. Stryker, Dr. Cornelius and many other possibilities. Maybe Omega Red, Juggernaut or even maybe the one, true Incredible Hulk could make appearances in this movie. I would love to see something done as well into Logan's deep past in the 1800's when he was known as James Howlett. God, the possibilities are endless.

How do you consider his other movies flops? Even though Van Helsing performed so-so in the U.S. it did well over seas. And his other films weren't big budget movies, and they performed well.

okay who is directing this?? that would be kool if bryan singer was doing it but there's no chance in that since he ditched us for superman but whatever.....i think this film would be good if they stay true to the comic book
