Clive Barker On Board for Dimension's "Hellraiser" Remake
Over at his official website, popular author / artist / filmmaker Clive Barker just shared some rather interesting news: He'll be writing, but not directing, a remake of his classic "Hellraiser" for the guys over at Dimension Films.
From Revelations: ""I’m excited about it - actually it’ll be kinda cool to revisit it once and see if there are things we can do to it which will make it significantly better.
"I wouldn’t wish to direct – I only want to write and be a part of the producing team. I wouldn’t want to revisit something that I did as a director, something that I did all those years ago: that would be too, in a way, painful - not painful but weird, difficult, strange…
"I am very happy at the idea of having some more money for the cool stuff – I don’t know how much more money, but it’s got to be more than the $900,000 that we had the first time!"

FILMCZY writes: on Oct 24 2006 07:14 AM Why can't Mr. Barker concentrate on more ORIGINAL material such as Tortured Souls instead of something he has been involved with for years. His fans deserve more than retreads... (Reply to this) |

FluxCapacitor writes: on Oct 25 2006 03:27 AM Studios should give Clive's projects more support FILMCZY - The reason why Clive couldn’t concentrate on Tortured Souls was that he wasn’t the only guy making the movie: it was being developed at Universal, and the suits ended up giving him the brush-off. Clive went back to his novel-writing, which he says he now prefers, as it gives him greater control (Souls is now back on at Universal, but with Todd McFarlane attached to direct). The book Clive’s working on now, The Scarlet Gospels, started out as a novella, but has since turned into a massive epic telling the story of an odyssey into Hell and Pinhead’s demise there. Since Clive has come full-circle with Pinhead, he now has the chance to put into the new Hellraiser script lots of elements that have grown out of the mythology after the ’87 film. All seems valid to me. What irritates me beyond belief is that studios could make about a dozen excellent features from the Books of Blood short stories (instead of remaking Hip Japanese Horrors Of The Week, or butchering Seventies classics); a truly menacing epic horror from The Damnation Game; fiercely original children’s films from The Thief Of Always and Abarat; or even make The Great And Secret Show - which has such a powerful family element to its storyline, it could do for dark fantasy what The Godfather did for mob movies. And they don’t. I’m utterly sick and tired of so many Barker projects being mishandled by studios and kicked off the starting blocks. He’s a terrific storyteller whose literary output makes for a daunting track-record of imaginative achievement. Studios should trust him, and his stories, and get the show on the road. Preferably a Great And Secret one. (Reply to this) |

FILMCZY writes: on Oct 25 2006 07:36 AM In reply to this comment (#847122) I completely agree. Barker is TOO original for Hollywood. His stories are very complex and the studios can't handle that. They want something that the 13 year olds can understand. God forbid you should have to THINK while watching a movie within the horror/suspense genre. I hate to see other people attempt to adapt his works because some of them have been pretty bad, even with his creative input---"Saint Sinner" anyone? Perhaps it's best he sticks to writing--at least he has total control over that aspect of his career. (Reply to this) |

FluxCapacitor writes: on Oct 26 2006 07:23 AM In reply to this comment (#847123) Yes, perhaps he should - although the thing I've always loved about Barker is his desire to tap into a range of different media and work his magic. In the end, it's the studios' loss. I've felt that Clive was approaching a kind of tipping-point lately after he sold Abarat to Disney for many millions, but according to a recent interview, the intellectual property has reverted to him as Disney wanted to put out a half-assed version. Abarat could be one SERIOUSLY colorful movie. As for horror, the studios are making it a very stagnant place to be. (Reply to this) |

In under 25 years? What, you whipper-snappers have some sort of "nostalgia" about the sex-while-skinning-a-rat scene from HR1? What exactly would they remake? Nastybits. Guess we'll never see Lou Diamond Phillips as "The Jaffe" from "The Great and Secret Show". (Reply to this) |

Lance Henriksen will get the Pumkinhead to chase Jodie Foster through the remake of the Sentinel (currently in production with Beverly D'Angelo reprising her role as the Furious Masterbator-- a must-see!) News on RT is an oxymoron, i.e. Marylin Manson as Frankenfurter.... (Reply to this) |
