"Casino Royale" - The Review, The Song, The DVD
by Scott Weinberg | October 25, 2006
Discuss Article
Looks like today's a busy day for "Casino Royale," what with its first review hitting the 'net, plus there's a new music video, a DVD release date, and some now-confirmed gossip about what Scottish actor turned DOWN the role of 007.

From Dark Horizons: "An early review of "Casino Royale" has gone up at The Sun and proclaims Daniel Craig "the best Bond since Connery... Craig makes Brosnan look a bit girlie in comparison". The paper also singles out the action sequences (notably the free running sequence), assorted performances and director Martin Campbell.

Also it's officially been confirmed by UK newspaper The Mirror & Director Martin Campbell that Ewan McGregor was the first choice for the role of James Bond but he turned the producers down."

hmmmmm I would liked it, he would have been a smarter wittier Bond, in my opnion. Craig is good but hes the muscle, hes the friend you bring along to a bar/club to cover your weak ass, (in case you hit on the newly engaged chick who forgot her ring) haha. Ewan is the wittier charmer who you bring along to break the ice with a group of hot chicks! And hopeful you get a few words in and you get your piece too! Thats how I roll and it works! Trust me its the best feeling in the world when it works!

Ewan McGregor...... naw, wouldn't have worked. people woundnt get past the lack of beard and force powers. Daniel Craig isn't the best choice in the world, but judging by the trailer, it's a decent choice.

I am not too sure that I would have liked Ewan in the part. But I know for sure its not because of Star Wars. I forgot he was in those until that comment reminded me.

"Craig makes Brosnan look a bit girlie in comparison"

That's arrogant. I was born in '86 and Brosnan was our generation's Bond, and I can't really see that being true. I guess I'll have to see it first, though.

First off, if you were born in 86, this is still your generation. I was born in 82, and I still feel that there hasnt been a generational Bond since Moore and Connery. They are the only 2 that have enough films.

I do, however, agree that it is a bit on the arrogant side. I do like the casting, a lot better than Ewan. Obi-Wan-Bond would not have been that good.

I know its been said before on this topic. But I watched Layer Cake awhile ago and ever since I found out that Craig was the new bond. I've had complete trust in the project.

To the person who said Craig is merely muscle. I'd have to disagree. Craig can be charming and witty PLUS he has the muscle in which you refered too.

I don't get a feeling too often for a movie. But I dunno, something tells me this will be a great film and a great new bond.

well I do have my hopes up! Because ideally Bond (the great ones) were tough and witty and charming etc etc. So I will give him a chance, the movie has promise.

When I first saw Bond (I'm also an '86er) it was Brosnan. I liked him enough, wasn't too big on Bond movies overall but I didn't mind them. Then there was one of those 'all week bond' marathons on tv and I happened to catch one with Connery....THANK GOD I DID!! The rest of the week (I think it was a Tuesday..) I basically did nothing but sit and watch Bond all day. A lot of the films seem to follow the same basic plot, but each one had something special about it in their own right. As did the Bonds. Connery is king in my mind.

Craig interested me from the start, but at the same time I kinda did become acustomed to Brosnan as the new Bond, so there is a part of me still holding to that for some reason, probably because I'm just so use to today's modern 'you play that character once, you play him again and again' like HP, LotR, BttF, PotC, SW, and all that....but I am getting more and more anxious to see Craig in action.

Anyone hear the theme song yet? I heard it on Sirius a couple days ago, and it was almost un-listenable. I have always liked Soundgarden and Audioslave too, but it was just awful.

The Sun is a UK tabloid
"The best Bond since Connery" I doubt it. Craig is creepier than John Mark Karr.

Not that Brosnan was bad, but he was sort of girlie? I mean, he looked like a chick with his shirt off

I agree that the song is terrible. I heard it a while back, and threw up in my mouth. This movie has promise. I have liked the idea of Craig as Bond since seeing Layer Cake. I just hope that this new re-imaging of Bond stays with the core of Bond and the books, not the stupid invisible cars and such. Opening weekend: I'll be there. As a thought, we should set a time and place in major cities to see this, could be kind of fun.

As an 80's girlie ive never been into Bond (only ever seen one in full) but i am getting quite excited about this. Remember this si the first Bond novel so really Craig sets the tone for what Bond should be like and i think they have made a good choice. He is muscly, good looking (though personally i dont like blondes) yet he does have charm.
And it doesnt matter if the The Su is a UK tabloid - surely Bond is more british than American so a Uk tabloid are allowed the final say (yes yes im English!)

first Bond Novel my arse!
Anyone who's actually read ANY of the Bond books knows these movies have nothing to do with them, other than the title.

In Casino Royale, Bond doesn't kill anyone. Not one person. And the whole story revolves around the game of Bacarat. I think they'll probably follow 1% of the actual story, which is much more than the last unglodly 25-or-so movies.

I'll probably see this, because this will be better than the Brosnan movies (which were far and away the worst Bond movies since Diamonds are Forever, or Moonraker). I loved Bond, but Brosnan's movies killed it for me. Hopefully my interest will be rekindled with a more "serious" movie.

I like McGregor but I do think that Craig is a better choice for Bond. I liked Brosnan, I thought he did just fine. I'll be seeing this opening night.
