So What's Next for the "Halo" Movie?
Now that Universal and Fox have broken up with Microsoft's "Halo" flick, all eyes turn towards Paramount and/or Warner Bros. -- but odds are the flick will only get made outside the studio system, or the producers will have to concede a lot of perks.
From Variety: "The U/Fox deal gave "Halo" a $128 million budget. And while Microsoft and the pic's producers aren't taking upfront fees, their collective gross is around 19%, sources said. That is significant for any film with no stars and a first-time director. It is especially daunting in the current conservative studio climate.
Speculation is that the filmmakers will either bend on budget and gross if they want a studio deal, or alternatively pursue a private financing strategy as Tom Cruise is doing with Washington Redskins owner Daniel Snyder, NVR chair Dwight Schar and Six Flags prexy-CEO Mark Shapiro.
Microsoft could even write the check, and rent distribution as Mel Gibson did with "The Passion of the Christ." The reward in success would be much greater than any studio deal would provide, but the vidgame owner would take the risk."

MPHopcroft writes: on Oct 27 2006 12:32 PM Ideally they would realize what an awful idea a Halo movie is and simply drop it. Video Games are Video Games, movies are movies, and never the twain shall meet, because every effort to make them do so has been a really horrible film. As for Microsoft getting into the movie business themselves, the very idea is abominable. (Reply to this) |

agentjames007 writes: on Oct 27 2006 02:36 PM It still seems strange that Universal will give money to the $225 million dollar Bruce Almighty sequel, but won't fund the movie based on one of, if not the greatest video game franchises ever. But I guess Microsoft will just write the check. That would be the smart thing to do. (Reply to this) |

And what a great movie that was! And of course there's Doom, which has a very strong recognition value, so clearly that is a much bigger franchise than Halo. And what a great movie that was! Heck, even Mortal Kombat should be considered a bigger franchise. And that was a fantastic movie! There probably won't be a Pac Man movie, but the Saturday morning cartoon show was so kickass it's still playing on Adult Swim! Go outside your circle of geeks and the only Halo people know about is the angelic kind. (Reply to this) |
