"Street Fighter: The Movie!" (Yes, another one.)
by Scott Weinberg | October 30, 2006
Blog Article | Discuss Article
Hey, remember that really goofy "Street Fighter" movie that starred Jean-Claude Van Damme and (in his final role) the great Raul Julia? Remember how it pretty much stunk? Yeah, well get ready for an all-new adaptation of that particular video game.

From Variety: "Ashok Amritraj's Hyde Park Entertainment and Capcom Ltd. are getting in the ring for a film version of popular vidgame franchise "Street Fighter."

Scribe Justin Marks has been tapped to adapt. Hyde Park and Capcom -- Japanese publisher of "Street Fighter" -- will produce the film in a joint venture.

Pic will focus on the game's most popular female fighter, Chun Li, but the exact storyline is being kept under wraps. In 1994, Universal released a "Street Fighter" movie starring Jean-Claude Van Damme that featured most of the characters from the game."

Hey, there's no way it could be lamer than the first flick. (Is there?)

Let me guess, a focus on Chun Li done in a Charlie's Angels style? A hot kickass chick trying to find her past? How about the only one standing between an evil organization headed by Bison and the takeover of all world government? Cliches all around. There are much better videogames to adapt into films than this. Street Fighter as a game had way too many randoms in its storyline to form a decent film and you can't take away those randoms without pissing off a lot of fans.

While as you say the orginal stunk, I thought that it was an interesting enough concept that is worth at least another try that could very well become a huge hit if they can assemble a decent cast, writer and director.

DUCK HUNT
I second that. I don't think that there is anything they can do to make me care about another Street Fighter movie. Actually, I dont thik that they can make me care about any video game movie.

what are you talking about?
man! last time i saw Street Fighter: The Movie i thought it was friggin fantastic! and despite the fact that i was 7 years old at the time, does not change a thing!

except it does! hahahaha. they should just mix Street Fighter, Tekken, Soul Caliber, King of Fighters, Virtua Fighter, and Mortal Kombat together have a cast of a hundred and fifty characters, then each of them only say one line before fighting. and the DOA girls would just dance in the background.

i'm not saying that would be a good movie, i've never even played those games besides MK.

Street Fighter was one of those movies where, since I was like 8 when it came out, I thought was the coolest movie on earth. So cool, in fact, that I saw it twice at the big screen and begged my mom for the VHS when it came out. Now, when I watch it, yeah, it's goofy, but, great for the memories. Still, it'll be great to see an updated adaptation with a better script, better acting, and, well, a better cast.

They should just call it STREET FIGHTER II!! Nobody remembers the original game and the second was what launched the franchise into exosphere.

It's a crime that Microsoft Flight Simulator has been largely ignored by hack scribes. It would make a decent bomb.

Oh, when will Qbert have his day?
