Anyone Interested in a "Time Bandits" Remake?
Today's daily remake news? Someone wants an all-new version of Terry Gilliam's "Time Bandits" to get made. I know, I know; I feel the same way you do.
From Moviehole.net: "The insipid trend of remaking earlier, better films continues with Variety announcing a remake of Terry Gilliam’s 80s fave, “Time Bandits”.
The new movie – assumingly being made with Gilliam’s contribution – will mostly likely be the same thing, just with a higher film stock. The original 1981 film, produced and directed by Gilliam (who created animations for Monty Python's Flying Circus) and written by Gilliam and Michael Palin, is one of the most famous of more than 30 theatrical features produced by Handmade Films, the London-based independent company backed in part by former Beatle George Harrison.
HandMade, headed by exec, Antony Rufus Isaacs, has been digging through the company archives looking for properties he can exploit. In addition to a redo of "Bandits," he’ll be making a tardy sequel to "The Long Good Friday."

Mikeal420 writes: on Nov 01 2006 10:40 AM though I'm sick of remakes as everyone else, but Time Bandits was definitly a low-budget film that was meant to be big-budget, and if Gilliam is on board to do the remake, I doubt he'll f**k it up I just wish he was doing the film version of "The Prisoner" instead of Chistopher Nolan, I love Nolan but Gilliam is by far the better choice for that pic-- anyone who's watched the show would agree (Reply to this) |

FILMCZY writes: on Nov 01 2006 10:57 AM Again I ask: Why does a bigger budget make a "better" film? I thought "Time Bandits" was fine as is. Does enhanced CGI make the story any more meaningful? If (when?!!!) they were to remake "Gone With the Wind" would a CGI burning of Atlanta make it better than the original? Gilliam is in a major creative slump right now (have you read the reviews for "Tideland"?"Brothers Grimm" anyone?) and I would be very surprised to see a studio give him a substantial budget to play with right now. Gilliam is a creative filmmaker but this is just beating a dead horse. (Reply to this) |

aconline writes: on Nov 01 2006 11:08 AM Remake Website I think that Rottentomatoes needs to make a whole new website for remakes. That way, we don't have to read the news or see it if we don't want to. I agree with FILMCZY, a bigger budget does not mean a better movie. Look at Posiedon for proof. Remaking this just seems pointless. (Reply to this) |

Mikeal420 writes: on Nov 01 2006 11:53 AM I agree that big-budget does not mean better, considering all the best films this year have been either indie or low-budget foreign films, that seems obvious. But when the original director is on board whose "creative slump" has to do more with bad screenwriters than bad directing, I don't think this is the worst idea imaginable- he just needs to get the original BBC writers on board as well (ofcourse the best idea would be to come up with something truly original, but that only happens now in Hollywood when they steal movies from East-Asia) (Reply to this) |

erny11 writes: on Nov 01 2006 02:46 PM The rules for successfull remakes are: 1) The source film needs to be obscure, old or bad. and/or 2) There needs to be a fresh perspective on the story. Diamonds and more lace added to an old prom dress do not make it nicer. The dress needs to be dismantled and resewn in a new fashion. The Omen is a perfect example of a movie that should not have been made; the original was too good. I am afraid Time Bandits is also too good and should not be redone by Gilliam. Look at the new Dawn if the Dead. It is a fresh look at a older film and worked quite well. Perhaps someone else should do Bandits but not Gilliam. (Reply to this) |

CinemaClubSC writes: on Nov 01 2006 06:32 PM How Do You Kill a Classic? Just Ask the Fellas Who Yeah, Time Bandits was a low budget film, but that's what made it so amazing in the first place. Gilliam faired much better under tight constraints because he was forced to get more creative and more inventive. This is clearly shown with his latest high budget film, the Brothers Grimm, which was very scattered and too heavily focused on CG effects. Please, I beg you, don't go and kill a classic. There really are too few nowadays... (Reply to this) |

kungfu_sage writes: on Nov 01 2006 07:29 PM hey I'm all for it, I think they should remake all the movies from the 80's with a bigger budget. lets start with goonies, then the rat pack movies, then go for back to the future, and finish it all off with the E.T.. all these would obviously be better if they remade them, cause we've gotten so much better at make movies since they were produced. (I know some people arn't the cleveres of folks so yes I am being sarcastic) any one heard any more news on the seven samurai remake with george cloony? (Reply to this) |

FILMCZY writes: on Nov 02 2006 07:22 AM In reply to this comment (#847853) Um, I was not referring to "Gone With the Wind" as a "low budget film." I was referring to the use of CGI and a larger budget making a movie somehow "better" than the original for those reasons alone. And please don't call me a "moron." I have really low self-esteem and now I'm going to cry... (Reply to this) |
