Sam Raimi to Direct "Doc Savage"?
Yes, there were superheroes before the Golden Age of DC and Marvel, and it looks like director Sam Raimi might be bringing a few of those old heroes back to life -- yep, more than one in the same movie!
From IGN Movies: "IGN has learned that several pulp heroes of yesteryear will be brought to life on the big-screen courtesy of none other than Dark Man and Spider-Man filmmaker Sam Raimi.
The project would unite a number of famous pulp heroes from Street and Smith Publications, which had once been among the top pulp publishers.
Characters that we were informed would be included in the film are Doc Savage, The Shadow and The Avenger, and quite possibly other (or all) major Street and Smith characters."

on Dec 07 2006 05:23 AM I would love to have this come about. The Doc Savage movie in the 70's was pretty bad. If done without comedy this could work. I did enjoy the 1994 Shadow film though. Not sure how they would handle The Avenger and the rest of the characters. (Reply to this) |

on Dec 08 2006 06:27 PM I just don't know if these old Pulp characters are acceptable by the standards of today's audiences. I enjoyed a lot of aspects of the Shadow and even the Phantom movies, but the style of these characters and their worlds just don't work well today. I can appreciate the pulpiness, but most people would view them as silly. But who knows...Indiana Jones is somewhat pulpy and people love him. I'd say town down the camp and just treat the material seriously. (Reply to this) |

on May 27 2007 01:04 PM Doc Savage/Shadow Sam Raimi movie Any character can come to life on the screen given the proper writing, acting, and directing. If anyone can successfully combine these pulp characters from the 1930's and 1940's it is Sam Raimi! It would be fascinating to have them working together, and perhaps at odds with each other over ego, doing what they think will be best for society, general misunderstandings, and of course distrust. The Doc movie in the 70's was intended to be a dud. The Shadow movie in the 90's was underappreciated. If Mr. Raimi can bring the baby boomers on board, who may connect from their parents old time radio shows and pulp novels, and appeal to a new generation he could have a super franchise of characters to play with for years to come. The mood that would probably work best would include elements of Batman Begins, 28 Days Later, a touch of Sin City, and for possible romance (Pat Savage perhaps) the Spiderman trilogy. I personally would like to see Zombies or an invading alien race or races (Think Halo the video game) as the villain as opposed to terrorists, mad supergenious desires to conquer the world, or a potential catastrophe. Not all of the heroes need to have enough time to flesh them out. Let some people wonder who they are. These characters would work together in a similar fashion to the Justice League or the Avengers. The pulp novels (Doc Savage/the Shacdow/the Avenger) and memorabilia still sell well on E-bay. If this production comes to fruition, and I have no doubt Mr. Raimi would handle it superbly, statues, action figures, novels, comic books etc., would follow suit. In addition to fulfilling many fans dreams he could singlehandedly revive our economy. I shall pray that right overcomes bureaucracy and that Mr. Raimi has a green light for this spectacular blockbuster!! Long Live Sir Sam Raimi!!!! (Reply to this) |
