New Screenwriter Boards the "Punisher" Sequel
by Scott Weinberg | December 19, 2006
Blog Article | Discuss Article
Thomas Jane has been making the internet rounds lately, and he's been telling anyone who'll listen that the world simply MUST have a sequel to "The Punisher." His most recent stop was a podcast interview in which he revealed who'll probably be writing said sequel.

From BigFanboy Livecast: "Things got off to a great start when Thomas Jane talked about "The Punisher 2," which looks to finally be making some progress. Tom announced that the latest draft of the screenplay is going to be written by Stuart Beattie, who penned "Collateral" for Michael Mann, and worked on all three "Pirates of the Caribbean" screenplays. Steve Niles pointed out that Beattie also did a draft for "30 Days of Night," which just wrapped shooting last week, and will be released October 19th, 2007."

Point of clarification: I don't think Mr. Beattie worked on the screenplays for the "Pirates" sequels, but I could be completely wrong there. The guy's other screenplays include "The Protector" and "Derailed."

Bring it on! The '04 version is one of my favorite guilty pleasures. So mocho and dumb. It certainly gets the job done as a balls-out action flick.

Just checked IMDB, it says this guy did the screen STORY for the first potc, and is credited for the characters in the next two. It sounds like he really had little to do with the last two pirate movies, which if the second movie is any indicator, was a really bad move for the series.

This guy sounds talented, i think he should do a fantastic job, especially with a movie like collateral under his belt.

I loved the torture scene from the first one with the popsicle.

I too enjoyed this movie and think that the flaws in the first one (and I admit there were a few) were likely due to the editing process and possibly the directors inexperience. I'm not really familiar with his directorial history, so don't take that as an expert opinion, but that's just how it seemed to me. There seemed to be quite a disconnect between what he wanted to do with the movie and what he was actually able to bring to the screen. In the making of he says he wanted it to be reminiscent of old spagetti westerns and Sam Peckinpaw movies. While I could see that's what he was going for it really needed some work on the final product. Plus Travolta was terrible in his role as the badguy.

If they make The Punisher 2 more of a hardcore Motherf**ker than the campy original, then this could be very good. This new guy has some cred too, pretty good short resume he has there. Even more promise!

I did love that fight with the Russian guy from the original BTW. Awesome and funny :)

Punisher was made on such a low budget, it's amazingly good considering. I hope they put the same kind of effort into the sequel, yeah and I know he died, but no more Travolta. Thomas Jane = Rad Punisher
