John Malkovich On Robert Zemeckis' "Beowulf" Process
by Scott Weinberg | December 20, 2006

John Malkovich sure isn't shying away from the high-end special effects movies these days. While doing some press for his recent "Eragon," the veteran actor spilled a few beans regarding his work on Robert Zemeckis' adaptation of "Beowulf."

This project is officially starting to sound pretty excellent to me. Here's some fairly interesting stuff from Malkovich and IGN Movies: "Malkovich pointed out that he is not simply providing a voice for the motion-capture film. "No, it's not that. You do everything but then it's given a form of computer animation afterwards. But, no, we were all on set. We were all acting. It's not film. There's no film, there's no lights. There are video references that the specialists and technicians utilize, but it's actually all recorded on computer and all the data is fed to the technicians and then they will animate it."

Click here for the rest of the report, which isn't all that unique, but does paint a pretty compelling picture for "Beowulf."

insanemansam5: It is not surprising that it is the same "thing" as it is the same director. Zemeckis is clearly working on perfecting the art form.

rcbaker87: I don't know how Beowulf can possibly be thought of as boring. Epic battles, one of the greatest heroes of all times, the coolest monster ever, and of course the beautiful Anglo-Saxon poetry. What else do you need? The only thing I could criticise it for is the amount of blood and guts described, especially when Grendel gets killed. I hope the film won't be quite as graphic!

Well, the film will surely be graphic. I don't know if it'll happen in the end but from what I've read Zemeckis intends to release an NC-17 rated IMAX 3D version (wooooo, blood and guts in 3D!) of the film, and a PG-13 version in regular 35mm prints.

just keep it an R. Zemeckis is a good director, but I find him hard-pressed to make a decent film as of late (his last great was Cast Away). Why does he shy from R? or just keep it NC-17. Don't fuck with it to make more money. Just make a good film and you won't have to worry about the returns. It's not rocket science.
