Foster Game for "X-Men" Spin-offs
by Fred Topel | December 28, 2006
Blog Article | Discuss Article
We can't interview anyone from an "X-Men" movie without asking about any possible spin-offs for them. There are so many in the works, from "Wolverine" and "Magneto" vehicles to a "Young Mutants" idea, so anyone could find a place. Ben Foster played Angel in "X-Men: The Last Stand" but he hasn't heard of any spin-off plans.

"You know, man, they don't really tell me," said Foster. "They don't tell anybody. They say okay, we got a script, we're shooting next month."

Should producer Lauren Shuler Donner and company come to Foster with another shot at Angel, he'd be down. "If the material felt like it expanded on the character, yeah."

However, Foster does not believe he is officially signed for multiple films. "Not that I've heard of," he said.

Please, Foster would be down for a Flash Forward spin off.

the X-Men franchise is on the slippery slope of Bad Movie Hell. the first two were great, the third one was passable, but if Tom Rothman thinks that hiring any hack writers or directors to make X-Men films out of mediocre scripts is gonna keep packing the seats, think twice. the series will only deteriorate if it goes on the way it is. X3 may have had a huge box office run, but most of that comes from the reputation of the previous two films, and X3 already has a bad reputation amongst the diehard fans, so it will be hard to recover from that. have they not learned from the Superman and Batman franchises?

I think it's time for a fresh spin on the series. A "New Mutants" film could be great. Take the focus off Wolverine and Magneto (especially if they're getting their own movies) and bring the younger characters to the forefront. One thing I loved about X3 was that the "kids" finally got to step up and see some action, and now would be a good time to continue that trend. Let's see Cannonball, Havok & Polaris, and (everybody wants it) Gambit join up. White Queen could come on as a new teacher. And how about some new villains? Speaking of which...

I think a great opportunity was missed with the end of X3. Angel was there. The Morlocks were there. They totally could have set up Archangel, and Apocalypse, for the sequel. Lameness.

Anyway, I don't think X3 was the end of the franchise, just the end of the first story arc. Let's bring in a new writer (Whedon!), a new director (Whedon!), and get crazy.
