New "Star Trek" Rumors Regarding Shatner, Nimoy and ... 007?

Apparently there was some goofy rumor floating around this past weekend: Word was that new Bond Daniel Craig would have a role in J.J. Abrams' upcoming "Star Trek" movie. I don't believe a word of it. In more believable news, William Shatner has even MORE to say about his involvement in the new "Trek" entry.

According to IGN and Dark Horizons, William Shatner seems pretty confident that Abrams' new "Star Trek" movie will contain a spot for not only himself, but for good old Leonard Nimoy as well. But don't mistake this for a quick paycheck or a grab at the spotlight. Shatner says "In order to entice Leonard and myself into the movie, it has to be meaningful in some way, so I don't know what they're gonna do."

If I were Shatner I'd just let it go already. Younger "Trek" fans aren't all that interested in Kirk and Spock, plus the guy's been doing some pretty amusing work on "Boston Legal" these days.

Hmm. How about "Khan! The Movie"? On the other hand, Deep Space Nine was a GREAT TV show! They should bring back Jadzia Dax and pretend that the last season never happened!

I have been checking out Rotten Tomatoes for some time and I am amazed at how many bogus/untrue Trek articles have been posted.

Also, why make a statement like this? "Younger "Trek" fans aren't all that interested in Kirk and Spock" Really, and what's your source on this? I am a fan Mr. Weinberg but today was not one of your better days. Sorry, but it sounds like you are talking out of your arse.

You wanna bitch, do it to whatever it is you call friends, not the people trying to read these articles, you bonehead.

As for an earlier comment on this strip, DS9 was the worst Star Trek series of them all. Rodenberry never would have approved of a series about war. DS9 never followed the Star Trek genre.

I like RT and I usually like Weinberg, but not every article is a winner and this is one that is definitely not a winner.

oh, but he'll do a CGI-altered "so-i-can-fit-into-that-uniform" trek-themed "amazing picture clarity" TV commercial, but artistic and "meaningful" would factor in his judgement for a quick paycheck? puh-leaze!

If you think his comment is so bad then why don't you get a job at the comment factory and through excellent comment production rise through the ranks to become the comment CEO and fire this guy so he can't make comments anymore!

Sorry but I just love it when a person complains about another person's opinion on RT. It's not like this comment board is some sort of literary masterpiece which should only be used by artistic word smiths less, it fall into the wrong hands and become a weapon of intellectual destruction!

You know what, Shatner endures because he has both moved on AND he embraces Star Trek.

I think he probably feels ok with being in a campy commercial spinning off of Star Trek if he can collect a paycheck and the rights owners give a thumbs up to the commercial. That's different from actually putting on the Kirk game face and playing Kirk in a part of the Star Trek franchise. If he were to really play Kirk in a new Star Trek movie, I can see him not wanting to do something totally meaningless.

From what I've seen of Shatner, he honestly respects the franchise and the fans. I respect him for that, and I respect the fact that he's managed to continue a career outside of Star Trek. That's why I don't think Weinberg gets it....the mentality here is just different from the average actor typecast in a long-gone character.

And I think he's nuts if he doesn't think having Kirk and Spock have even brief roles wouldn't be a big benefit for the movie - curiosity alone will drive tickets, and, if the worry is about Trekker street cred., having the two most notable characters in the film (played by the original cast) is important.

Remember, no Star Trek film has even been made without years of a TV series to establish the characters. Whatever this new film will be about will not jump directly off of a TV series playbook - even if it is young Kirk and so on. That makes fans and producers nervous enough, and if Shatner can help calm nerves, it is probably being welcomed. And hey, if J.J. Abrams is an original Star Trek fan, how could he NOT want Shanter and Nimoy in the film.
