Groening's Bargain to Yield Four "Futurama" Movies
After DVD revived "Family Guy," Fox looked at their other major prematurely cancelled cartoon for a possible second chance. While "Futurama" will not return to the Fox Network, Matt Groening got Fox productions to give him four whole straight to DVD movies for the "Futurama" crew.
"I was frustrated when it got cancelled, but Fox, 20th Television is the one who came back and said, 'Would you like to do a DVD movie?'" Groening recalled. We said, 'Let's do two' and they said, 'Well, why not three?' and we said, 'Well, why not four?' and they said, 'Okay, four' and then that's it."
After this, Comedy Central won a bid to air the films as new "Futurama" episodes. "We're writing them as movies and then we're going to chop them up, reconfigure them, write new material and try to make them work as separate episodes. Chopped up is an indelicate way of putting it but we are doing them as movies and then we are reconfiguring them and writing new material and narration and this that and the other so that they'll stand on their own as episodes."

With the initial market intended for DVD, Groening and crew can go a lot more extreme with the humor than they could on the air. "Those are the marching orders we gave ourselves, yes, to really try to push it and do things we might not be able to do on TV. And then Comedy Central picked up the show and we went, 'Okay, probably there's nothing we can think of that Comedy Central won't run' because I'm astonished at what I see on Comedy Central every day."

lpbreeze writes: on Jan 28 2007 04:10 PM I'm glad to hear its coming back but I hope Comedy Central limits the ad time. Its darn near impossible to watch a show on that channel with all the ads they have. There were some Reno episodes where I swear there were more ads than show. 24 minutes show in 30 minute slot would be great. (Reply to this) |

silverfish05 writes: on Jan 28 2007 04:11 PM Well because otherwise there wouldn't be 4 of them. I mean think about it, would you rather have 1 Futurama movie just to see it on the big screen, or would you rather have 4 movies you can buy all at once? (Reply to this) |

lpbreeze writes: on Jan 28 2007 08:59 PM you know one thing that has always bothered me about syndication which isn't really happening here but take Family Guy and Scrubs. They are on everyday. If Cartoon Network had only shown Family Guy once a week they would have had huge ratings and still would get big ones. But once the show is on everyday too many repeats. Especially Scrubs. Not nearly enough episodes made to show it everyday. Married with Children and the Simpsons sure but not a lot of other shows. (Reply to this) |

Look at this quote: With the initial market intended for DVD, Groening and crew can go a lot more extreme with the humor than they could on the air. That doesn't exactly strike me as a good sign. Futurama Extreeeme! With tons of boobies and swearing and all the stuff that's COOL! WATCH WATCH WATCH! Futurama as it was, on network TV, was fantastic. I don't want them to go overboard. Ehhh... (Reply to this) |

bamb0o-stick writes: on Jan 29 2007 03:48 AM In reply to this comment (#854154) I'm more worried that the Futurama team might not have the same writers. In my opinion, the writers are the ones that make or break the show. More freedom on what they can do on the show is fine, just as long as its not full of stupid continuous sex jokes and cursing (although wasn't the show a little like that? lol). As long as its the same good Futurama sci-fi humor and its tasteful, I'll be excited. (Reply to this) |

Just look at how awful the first season of "Family Guy" after their "intermission" was. Horrible, just horrible..and they didnīt even realize it! (Reply to this) |
