WB Buys A(nother) "Wonder Woman" Screenplay
by Scott Weinberg | February 02, 2007
Blog Article | Discuss Article
Panic not, my dear Whedonites. Your beloved filmmaker is most definitely still attached to Warner Bros.' "Wonder Woman" flick -- but they just bought an additional screenplay ... mainly to avoid confusion (and litigation) down the line.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, new screenwriters Matthew Jennison and Brent Strickland are the lucky recipients of a paycheck, mainly because WB wanted to get their spec script off the market ... plus the Warner execs also claim to like it a whole lot. The guys' screenplay is a period-piece "Wonder Woman" adventure, whereas Whedon's movie will take place in the modern era.

So if it seems a little silly for a studio to buy a screenplay they won't actually be using, imagine how much more they'd have to dole out if a lawsuit arose just as "Wonder Woman" was nearing completion. I'm not exactly sure how a lawsuit would have arisen from this situation, but the WB lawyers are obviously a lot smarter than I am.

Regarding Joss Whedon's next baby ... we got nothing. Expect some big casting news as soon as we hear it!

Joss Whedon is no longer working on Wonder Woman. He posted himself about it on Whedonesque:

Quite dissapointed about Joss no longer doing Wonder Woman. Still, I can understand why maybe they weren't too big on his ideas. I mean, take a look at all of the recent female superhero movies (Elektra, Catwoman). The emphasis is put on how hot they look in their costumes, not on creating a great stories with ineresting characters. Knowing Joss and his tendancies for creating strong, likable women and addicting storylines, this would be too much of a deviation from what's expected from hollywod. Yeah. I'm a little bitter :)

Looking foreward to Goners though :)
