Carrey Believes "Ripley's" Is Back On
by Fred Topel | February 04, 2007
Blog Article | Discuss Article
The on again, off again, "Ripley's Believe It or Not" project is back on, said Jim Carrey. He will star as Robert Ripley in Tim Burton's film.

"It’s going to be wonderful," Carrey said. "It’s just an incredible world to open up. He was a very much the champion of the underdog and people who were a little bit different and freakish."

Also known as quite a fashionable man, with plenty of lovely ladies on his arm, the film may address Ripley's romantic side too. "He was about celebrating life. He was about proving its special-ness."

Carrey in this month's "The Number 23"

As for the shifting status of Ripley's on the production schedule, Carrey explained it was not a money issue. "Financing never went away. We just got kind of close to going into production and I just felt like the script wasn't quite where it could have been. I had a lot of ideas that would have facilitated a change in plan, a change of approach to the production of it so I just thought it could be more than it was."

Carrey expects to begin filming in early 2008.

I don't know why, but I have a feeling this will be one of Burton's weaker films (I hope I'm wrong). I'm glad Burton is doing "Sweeney Todd" first-I cannot wait to see it!

I think it sucks when actors dictate the script of a movie. I dunno, maybe he's a good writer, but odds are he's dictating someone else's job to them.

I totally agree. These movie stars think they know everything. Look at Harrison Ford, he has to approve final scripts for movies he stars in and all of his latest films blow chunks. I am all for actors working within the confines of the material and adding little nuances to their character but come on, trying to rewrite the material? Leave that to the producers and screenwriters and just stick to acting. Aren't their egos big enough making $15-$20 mill a pic?

i disagree. to make a good movie it takes collaboration. The actor is the guy who has to make the script happen. you have to have two rocks to create a spark in order for it to turn into a fire. Besides, the actor usually takes more heat over a bad movie than the writers do anyway. maybe not with critics, most people only think of the actor. MOst people wont say hey that new film by that writer sucked. THey would say....That new Jessica Simpson movie sucked. most people dont pay attention to the writers as much as the actors
