Whedon Walks On "Wonder Woman"

Just before the weekend we learned that Warner Bros. had commissioned a second "Wonder Woman" screenplay, and now we now why: Fan favorite filmmaker Joss Whedon is officially off the project.

Whedon breaks the news to his loyal fanbase over at Whedonesque: "Let me stress first that everybody at the studio and Silver Pictures were cool and professional. We just saw different movies, and at the price range this kind of movie hangs in, that's never gonna work." (Click here for the rest of his statements.)

The busy writer/director plainly admits that he had some difficulty with the project, and while he was hoping for a "slam dunk," all he really achieved was a roll around the rim. WB will probably move forward with their "Wonder Woman" flick eventually, but Mr. Whedon will be moving on to other things. (He's been talking about this "Goners" project for a while now...)

At least now we don't have to wonder who'll be playing the super-heroine any more. Those rumors were getting pretty tiresome. No word yet on who'll be replacing JW in the director's chair, but you know we'll post the news when it's available.

(Is it too early to start begging Whedon for that "Serenity" sequel again?)

That's a tough piece of news, I read it on IGN a few days ago. I also had trouble seeing Wonder Woman being a good comic book movie, especially considering how such movies are made nowadays. I think that may have been why Whedon was having such trouble writing a script. Anyways, all the excitement I had for this movie derived from the fact that Whedon was both directing and writing. Now, who cares. Maybe now that he has this extra time he'll be able to convince Marvel to let him write a new volume for the current Astonishing X-Men storyline.

I fear for any adaption these days. Sometimes they go really well. Comic book movies are generally pretty good. At least they are not as bad as video game movies......curse you Uwe Boll.

Now any interest I may have had in Wonder Woman is gone. Vanished. Not that it sounded that good to begin with. Still, I'll follow Whedon's writing wherever it goes.

I'll follow Mr. Whedon anywhere too. As much as I liked "Serenity", my selfish side wishes he'd go back to TV, and give us an hour of his talent every week, instead of a 2-hour movie every few years.

I wasnt looking forward to this movie anyway, a wonderwoman movie seems like it would be utter crap. If Whedon didnt like the way it was going, im glad he left. And seriously now, we need more Firefly. Movie, Tv, comic book, video game, animated series, SOMETHING!

She Hulk would make for a much better movie. It is after all an easier storyline to fallow.

Jessica Biel would be prefect for either role Wonder Woman or She Hulk. Hell she is just prefect.

I'm in the "why were they making Wonder Woman" camp. You can play off stories like Batman and Spidey's in today's world. Hell you can even play off Supes just because of the past the character's had in american lore and cinema. How the hell do you write a legitimate flick on Wonder Womn; keeping the fans happy while modernizing her AND make her legitimate/enjoyable (Women comic book characters haven't exactly had a good track record thus far). I pat Whedon on the back for trying, but that one is just a hard flick to scratch-she's so freakin' cheesy. I hope they never make a WW movie.

Now Joss can get to work on Goners and Serenity II (all I have to say is, "Two by two, hands of blue"). And when are we going to get Buffy back on the big screen? Now that he's writing season 8 for Dark Horse, maybe he can convince the studios that a big screen reunion (ala Firefly/Serenity) would be a wise option.

And now that Wonder Woman is collapsing, maybe someone else will pick up the slack and release the first good female hero on the big screen (Elektra & Catwoman do not count at all). Dazzler and Amethyst are my picks. And when are we getting the Cloak & Dagger movie?

Honestly i think a sequel to Serenity would be very feasable. After Box Office and DVD sales, didn't the last movie break even? That was with most people having no idea where the hell this movie came from (myself included). I'm one of the many who saw the movie first, and liked it so much I immediately went out and bought the show, which I fell in love with (better than the movie, IMO). I can only assume that the fan base has gotten much bigger since the movie, and that a second movie would be able to turn a profit, at least as long as it's on a similar budget.

Wait, i forgot, are we supposed to talk about Wonderwoman? I never liked her pants, they look like granny undies.

Frankly, if the Serenity movie is an indicator, Josh is a better TV director - no insult, as his TV is better than most movies. I just think the format works better for him, although he's just getting going with movies, so who knows.

Maybe it is time for a whole new project for Josh. Buffy and Serenity were fun, but they're pretty dead right now. Serenity would work best, and did work best as a series. Buffy could make a movie jump, but what for? I personally think the series finale was one of television's best. Hats off to Josh for pulling that off - so many (ahem, Sienfeld) did not.

Oh, and Wonder Woman as a movie was a sucky idea.
