The Dude Teams Up With "Iron Man"
by Scott Weinberg | February 07, 2007
Discuss Article
What do Robert Downey Jr., Gwyneth Paltrow, Terrence Howard, and Jeff Bridges all have in common? They've all been nominated for Oscars -- and they're all set to star in Jon Favreau's "Iron Man" adaptation.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Mr. Bridges will be playing an old-school colleague / friend of Tony Stark, but that's all the producers are dishing out so far.

And if right now you're scratching your head wondering who Jeff Bridges is, shame on you. (You know him from "Tron," "Starman," "Jagged Edge," "The Fisher King, " "Fearless," "Seabiscuit," and (of course) "The Big Lebowski.")

Bridges as a gymnastics coach in "Stick It," (which features this great "Lebowski" nod)

Marvel boss Kevin Feige seems justifiably happy with the casting choice: "He's excited about doing a movie like this, and we're excited to have him in this particular role. There are many facets to this character which I can't discuss, but looking at the spectrum of all of Jeff's roles, this fits in nicely with the man who played 'Starman,' 'Tucker,' 'Big Lebowski' with a little bit 'Tron' thrown in ... This rounds out our ensemble, and I think it's one of the strongest casts ever assembled for one of our films."

No argument here.

Production on "Iron Man" is scheduled to begin next month. The flick is scheduled to hit screens a year from this May -- so expect a lot more news. (I'm expecting them to cast Kevin Kline and Jennifer Connelly next.)

I'm looking forward to this. Looks like Marvel is starting off strong. Nice cast. At least they have their priorities right, so it seems.

HEY! i got a GREAT idea! how about we drop jon faverau, who seems to be doing a great job, and hire SHAWN LEVY for this picture! it could be a comedic, more light hearted Iron Man! in fact, SHAWN LEVY should direct every superhero movie ever.

hey warners/DC, take a look at what marvel is doing with iron man, and get a fu***** clue. the only superhero movie you've gotten right in the last 15 years was batman begins.

Since the resurgance, DC has attempted, what, like 2 films (I'm not counting Catwoman, that was an anomaly)? Marvel put out like 50, half of which could be considered "bad" (overexaggeration, but you get the point). Maybe Marvel should be looking at DC in what THEY'RE doing, focusing on and putting major effort into one or two films at a time, and making sure they're good, rather than pumping sh!t out like Elektra and FF. --->coming from a Marvel fanboy, mind you.

While I can't defend Elektra, FF and Daredevil do have a lot of people who like them. Though, I think what he was getting at is it seems DC is purposefully sabotaging their own film. Making it lighthearted? What, like Batman and Robin?

Who outside of comic fandom knows who Iron Man is? Marvel needs to only make movies on Superheroes that are known by everyone. That includes Ghost Rider too. Marvel should just stick with their big three. Spider-man, Fantastic Four and X-men. Nuff said!

I don't think FF belongs in that list.

hate to disagree, but...
its not about whether people have heard of a book before. rather, how well it translates on screen. case in point: dc's vertigo line has berthed two movies.. one, constantine, while by no means a great movie, is still very watchable... second case: 'V' which is a great movie, and adapted very well to the big screen.

i dont mind marvel whoring out their lesser "heroes" like elektra or ghost rider... its the big boys who count: spiderman and xmen were great, i honestly liked the first hulk, and yes, FF while a crappy start, seems to be getting better with the silver surfer.

iron man, captain america, these guys demand respect... you get the idea. Flash is one of DC's biggest guns, give him the respect he deserves! is all im saying.

but this is an iron man post. it looks like its going to rock, although we havent seen anything yet. my enthusiasm for this project grows with each new thing i hear about it (although i dont really like paltrow, but she's good)

FF crappy? Noway. Campy? Yeah, but, in no way crappy. It was light hearted fun, so what? Anyways, I can't wait for Iron Man. And, I can wait for next Friday. You guys know why.
