Jason Lee Signs On for "Chipmunks" Movie
by Scott Weinberg | March 09, 2007
Discuss Article
Another cool actor has been seduced by the CGI machine: Funny guy Jason Lee has signed on to star opposite Alvin, Simon and Theodore in Fox's live-action version of "Alvin and the Chipmunks."

And just when you started to get visions of Bill Murray slumming through both "Garfield" movies, we learn that "Alvin" will be directed by Tim Hill -- the guy who helmed "Garfield: A Tale of Two Kitties." For Mr. Lee's part, the CG stuff should be old hat by now; he recently voiced the title character in the upcoming "Underdog" movie.

Production begins next month, and they'll be working from a screenplay by "Simpsons" scribe Jon Vitti. The plot will cover the origins of The Chipmunks band, all three of whom will be computer animated. And get this: It's already scheduled for a December 14th release!

What would you expect from a guy who named his son Pilot Inspektor?

hahaha, that's awesome...

It sounds like crap, but honestly, I can't blame the guy. If I was a big Hollywood type and that role was offered to me I would probably take it, the chipmunks are sweet.

I wish they'd just do an animated movie ala Curious George instead of a CGI one. I don't see how the chipmunks can possibly look good in CGI.

I don't know about this, I use to like the chipmunks when I was younger. I hope it's allright for Lee's sake. But the sweet just isn't as sweet without the sour.

Oh, GOOD. This is definitely going to be a great movie. I can't imagine it being a horrible disaster that makes me wish I was never a child so I could never have my childhood abused like this.

Definitely going to not be awful.

Uhhh... guys?

I'm pretty sure that Lee isn't doing a chipmunk voice. It says that he's starring opposite the trio, meaning that he must be playing their manager, Dave.

It would be silly to get big names for the chipmunks when you have to alter their voices so much to make them sound like the original chipmunks anyway.

Ah let's face it, when you've heard one chipmunk sing, you've heard them all and it's hard to tell them apart. Kind of like American Idol.

It's not my favorite, but it is way up there. I loved it and will never understand the haters of such a great film.

The whole film should be CGI, live-action with CGI characters just doesn't look right, a la Garfield.

I don't now what's more incomprehensible: that anyone involved with the Garfield movies is allowed anywhere near a movie set ever again or that anyone thought a Chimpunks movie was a non-mind-numbingly-awful idea without the assistance of numerous psychoactive substances and an aggressive program of shock treatments and frontal lobotomies. You can't blame Jason Lee for wanting to make a living, but surely there are better ways to do it. Some of them involve the restaurant industry.....

Good lord, whatever happened to Jason Lee for christ sakes. Since he joined this cult he only does pure, awful stuff (and make no mistake about it, "My name is Earl" is hideous as well).
