Doug Jones Doles Out Some "Hellboy 2" Info
by Scott Weinberg | March 21, 2007
Blog Article | Discuss Article
He played the body of Abe Sapien in the original "Hellboy," plus he was Pan in "Pan's Labyrinth" and the Silver Surfer in this summer's "Fantastic Four 2," but versatile actor Doug Jones plans to be extra-busy once "Hellboy 2: The Golden Army" gets rolling in May.

The first piece of news is that Mr. Jones will now be supplying the voice for Abe Sapien, which means that David Hyde Pierce will not be returning to that particular gig. (Shame, really, I thought he did a really good job in the first movie.) In addition to the heroic Sapien, Jones will also be playing the roles of "Angel of Death" and "The Chamberlain."

All these memorable characters, and I bet you probably wouldn't recognize Doug Jones if you tripped over him in a shopping mall. I sure wouldn't.

I thought David Hyde Pierce did a good job also, but I guess it's not fair that he should get all the credit without doing the physical acting.

I thought Hellboy overall was an underrated film, highly entertaining and well-directed. But I wonder if this is a step-backward for Del Toro. Pan's Labyrinth was a work of creative genius-- if he goes back to doing commercial projects people might forgot just how creative a director he is. Then again, maybe the studios will give him some sway now that he''s earned it.

Just PLEASE, no more Blade movies!!!

oh good, thats actually the best news that could have come out of the Hellboy 2 camp. I really disliked Abe Sapien's voice in the first one. David Hyde Pierce made his character sound like he had a stick firmly up his butt the entire time.

I think that was the point of casting him, his character was the uptight intellectual, while Hellboy went purely on instinct. It's a formula that worked.

Worked huh? Thats why David Hyde Pierce is coming back to do the voice, cus it "worked". Doug Jones voice in the animated cartoon not only works but is more fitting in my opinion.

I like Doug, but i really wan't David back in the sequel. i find his voice more fitting, althought Doug did a really good job in both Hellboy animated movies (which are awesome BTW)

I havn't heard Doug Jone's voice before. How similar does he sound to Peirce? In the animated movies? Just curious. I would think they would be smart to keep the same kind of personality behind the voice of the character, similar to Peirce's aristocratic tone. It's a very fitting demeanor for Abe.

He doesn't play "Pan"
He doesn't play "Pan" in Pan's labyrinth. Pan was a liberty the American translators took with the name of the movie which was really "The Fauns Labyrinth." His name is never mentioned as Pan (its never mentioned period) and The actual mythical creature Pan has nothing to do with the Faun in the movie.

I think the reason David is not comming back is because its obvious Del Toro has formed a closer Director/actor relationship with Jones, and so naturally would like to see him play the actor he did all the physical work on to begin with(not to mention that Del TOro probably has more influence now in the making of the film). I've heard no mention by Del Toro criticizing Pierce's performance

I liked him in Pan's Labyrinth, but the fact the Jones is starring in a sequel to one of the worst action films ever made(Fantastic Four, NOT Hellboy)does not bode too well

I'm just going to throw in a quick two cents...

Pan's Labyrinth, while beautifully filmed and wildly creative, was terrible. There are so many plot holes, inconsistencies, and flawed scenes that I was wondering if I was watching one of del Toro's student films. I love the man's work but I honestly feel this one was completely OVERrated (though I agree that Hellboy 1 was very UNDERrated).

Just saw Hellboy 2 and loved it. Much more focused but still on the imaginative scale of Pan's Labyrinth. I was awestruck by some scenes and entertained throughout.
