Jackie Chan! Jet Li! Michael Angarano??
We've known for a while that Jackie Chan and Jet Li were planning to collaborate in a first-time cinematic showdown loosely based on an ancient Chinese legend. But now we're starting to see just how "loosely" that may be, as the pic's first major co-star has been announced -- "Sky High"'s teenage superhero, Michael Angarano.
Not to knock Angarano or anything; the kid's got over forty screen appearances under his belt, dating back to 1995, and he's only nineteen years old. Those roles include parts in "Lords of Dogtown," "Dear Wendy," and "Will & Grace," where he played Jack's sperm donation-spawned son. But the "J & J Project/Kings of Kung Fu?" That's supposed to be the coolest Jet vs. Jackie square-off since…Chan faced off with Bruce Lee in "Enter the Dragon." Or when Li fought himself in "The One."
The Hollywood Reporter's got some further details on Angarano and where his character fits in: "Angarano will play a troubled 17-year-old wannabe kung fu warrior who, after a humiliating defeat at the hands of a street gang, is sent back in time to ancient China on an impossible mission to set free the imprisoned Monkey King (Li) and return to him his all-powerful staff."

Angarano in the Sundance entry "Snow Angels"
Also giving the project a decidedly fluffier feel is director Rob Minkoff, the family fare specialist who brought us "Stuart Little," "Stuart Little 2," "The Haunted Mansion," and that great segment from "Who Framed Roger Rabbit?" entitled "Tummy Trouble."
According to IMDB, there are a few other names officially in the cast -- Chinese singer-actresses Ruby Lin and Yifei Liu.
Minkoff will work off a script adapted by John Fusco ("Young Guns," "Hidalgo") with production starting this May.

Shaomaike writes: on Mar 26 2007 07:25 PM Jet Li vs. Jackie Chan? I don't think so. Just because this movie is set to include two martial arts film legends, it doesn't necessarily mean they'll be fighting each other. Firstly, in the classic Chinese novel on which this film is to be based, the two characters the actors are playing are traveling companions -- the Monkey King and the Buddhist monk "Sandy". They may have one initial fight early on when they meet, but that's all. Secondly, I believe Jet Li is supposed to have retired from on-screen martial arts. The filmmakers do seem to be taking great liberties with the original story, and maybe Jet Li's cinematic martial arts retirement is premature. In any case, I believe promoting this film as a Jet Li vs. Jackie Chan showdown is fallacious. In the international coverage of this project, I have yet to see any indication that these guys are set to battle each other. I recommend that the RT writers covering this story familiarize themselves with the source material. (Reply to this) |

greatwhitetomato writes: on Mar 26 2007 09:22 PM Disappointing I was so excited to get to see Jackie Chan's manic stunts next to the grace and form of Mr. Lee. Now, what do we get???? Some watered-down story with unnecessarily dialog- Lee and Chan! Who needs a script when you have choreography, lets have a ten page script and let these guys do what they do.l Why does hollywood have to take Ideas one by one and summarily crap on them. poo on a stick! (or on a reel in so many cases) (Reply to this) |

eastern2western writes: on Mar 26 2007 10:56 PM Lower your expectations Jackie Chan will be 54 and Jet Li would probably be some where about 45 by this time the movie is done. Please, you fans should just hang on to your memories and do not expect a lot of action for this movie (Reply to this) |

Bigbrother writes: on Mar 27 2007 08:55 AM In reply to this comment (#859315) Yeah, cause when Jackie Chan was 45 it really slowed him down...what is up with people fascination with age and actors not being able to do stuff once they reach a certain age? If it was real fighting then yes, age would be a factor, but I bet Jackie can still take a fake punch with the best of them. I can't wait for Indy 4 and this to come out and rock to prove all you age-haters wrong. (Reply to this) |

ben_oblivion writes: on Mar 27 2007 12:19 PM Wow...this could almost be a really cool movie...but it won't be. For one, they definately picked the wrong director for this one, why not look at some really great japanese action directors. Secondly, they're two different kinds of action stars. Jet Li uses all those wires and crazy choreography while Jackie Chan just uses his body, so where do you go with that? And lastly, did you read the plot? He goes back in time? Come on guys, you can think of something better than that. Once again, a great example of what could have been great, but will undoubtedly suck. (Reply to this) |

mic138 writes: on Sep 14 2007 05:48 AM Wait a minute! Wasn't Fearless touted as Jet Li's last martial arts movie? I am so confused. I guess studios will say anything to get you to buy tickets. And so help me if they hype this movie as a showdown between these legends only to be disappointed, once again, by a lame story-line and bits of action. And Jackie??? For once, in your career, can you put away those slapstick comedy stunts and do some serious on screen fighting? Your old films just had enough serious butt-kicking to satisfy my craving but your comedy routines were never particularly funny in western cultures. Lastly, Tony Jaa is or will be the future in martial arts cinema. Please please please don't let his brand of movies be tarnished by Western storylines or direction. (Reply to this) |
