Tobey Maguire Thinks Twice About a "Spider-Man 4"
by Scott Weinberg | April 05, 2007
Discuss Article
This kind of stuff seems to happen like clockwork: An actor in the midst of publicizing a "part 3" will talk about how he's "done" with the series ... and then a few weeks later his tune will change just a little bit. Just ask Tobey Maguire.

Despite not having a contract for a fourth "Spider-Man" movie, Mr. Maguire now seems to be keeping all doors open and all bridges unburned. He told the Sci-Fi Wire that "It all depends on if there's a story worth telling ... If they come up with a good movie, and the whole team wants to get back together, and we feel like we can make a good movie that's worth making, then I'm up for it."

This runs a little bit counter to comments the actor made a few weeks back, but hey, why not stay in the game for a few more movies, right? Maguire's redheaded co-star (Kirsten Dunst) made some similar comments a few months back. Basically how everyone should take a break and then maybe reunite for a fourth chapter andzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz.....

Producer Avi Arad seems to definitely want a fourth "Spidey" flick, and I think he'd go ahead with or without Maguire, Dunst, and even Sam Raimi. C'mon, do you guys really think Sony and Marvel want to stop at three movies??

"SM3" opens on May 4th -- and it's gonna be huge.

When there's Vemon, So is Carnage!
And what is he trying to say, "the whole team", I have money on Harry Dying. They just need to kill off Franco, and something really gory or something, like Venom gets ahole of him and makes him his play toy.

But, I think the reason he came back saying he's has doors opened for a 4th is because everybody is so Gyllenhaal right now for the 4th (including me). And Magruire had to think on what to fall back on and decided to "have doors open" because Gyllenhaal is a superb actor and probably be a bit better then him.

I don't think they need to do Carnage. I accepted the fact Tobey wanted to move on but that ould be awesome if he stayed. I think the fourth one should be about the Lizard, since they already have Doctor Conners in there. Either him or Mysterio, played by maybe Bruce Campbell. Carnage is too much of a violent psychopath for them to put in.

This is great news. The thing I love about these current film franchises (i.e. Spider-Man, Lord of the Rings, Batman, and to a lesser degree X-Men) is that they are keeping the original talent involved. It makes for a better experience and it makes me a whole lot more excited to see the next chapter.

I'd love to see the Rhino, it would be cool to see a giant dude crashing through everything and throwing trucks around!

I think it really all depends on Raimi. I think if he comes back for a forth film, the rest of the cast and crew would line up behind him. Thats what i would do at least...

I agree. I think they must have offered Tobey Maguire a LOT of money. At the same time, I'm sure he's had some fun making these flicks. I'm just not so sure I want to invest in two, possibly more, Spidey flicks. To me, the other two were slightly overrated. Oh, what the hell, I'll still go see 'em just to make up my own mind.

Hey... they could do them all!! haha yea i had heard something about Bruce Campbell maybe taking up the role of Mysterio, and the whole Dr Connors thing has been put off way too long, they definitly need to bring him in for some fun... Imagine that 3villain storyline, if they decided to do it again... Venom (Eddie Brock) in jail, the symbiote seems to like his cellmate... voila, Carnage, then Spiderman plays a couple pranks on Quentin Beck (for not letting him into Mary Janes play), is humiliated, and becomes Mysterio to take revenge on Spidey, and then finally Dr. Connors experimenting with lizard DNA to regrow his missing arm... and then paying the price for it.

It would be beautiful.

I would love to see Maguire come back for more, and yeah they need to do the Lizard story line all the way. I would be so pumped.

Studios are sucking all the franchises dry....until whats left is lifeless, bloodless movies very far away from what they initially wanted to accomplish. I say leave it alone. The 1st 2 are good movies, very well-made and the 3rd one looks like it will join the ranks then why not leave it at that.

Also these movies are extremely expensive and take a lot of time to make. And they dont always have to deliver good quality coz except for a few turkeys, these movies mint money. Like Pirates 2.....extremely ordinary but made a billion dollars.

I don't see why they couldn't do more. They are NOT running out of storylines. Besides the 40 years or whatever of comic material, they could (gasp) incorporate NEW things. They could make a ton of them.

I think Tobey wants to make another Spiderman because he wants to top the second film. For some reason with all of the trailers and all I don't think this movie is going to be anywhere near as good as the second film. It looks like a great story but for some reason the acting in the trailers looks uneven, are Thomas Hayden Church and Franco going to screw this one up? I'll be there May 4th anyways.

I think every superhero franchise should make a trilogy, then come back 6 years later with a new cast for another trilogy.

I know everybody is real excited for a fourth one, and the other two are alright and the third seems pretty good, but what fans need to realize is that at some point it's not going to matter if they are good or not, because the only thing in hollywood that never changes is that movie producers will milk an idea FOR EVERY PENNY IT IS WORTH. The last thing i want is a "Batman and Robin" version of Spider-man. I think they need to save the goodness of the original films and just let it go. There are plenty of other great comic stories out there (Flash, the Tick) and of course, Raimi could always make another Evil Dead...and not a remake.

Ahhhh what happened to the heady days of Claudia? When she was so full of potential. Now buried in a sea of mediocrity. Excluding Drop Dead Gorgeous of course which was brilliant. "For Christ sake Amber, she copped your tap shoes while flying thru the air like a frickin lawn dart!!!!"

I could see a Spider-Man 4. If they leave it open for 4 I'll want it, but if they wrap everything up and tie everything off in this film, I say leave it at 3. Sure there are a ton of plotlines, but as other people have been saying there are a ton of superhero's out there with good plotlines too. Someone mentioned The Tick, I could go for a comedy/superhero movie that didn't suck. Bring the cast of the TV show back or something and rock out. Batman, Superman...hell, I would like to see X-Men remade already into what it frakkin' should have been. Those movies suck ass.
