Anthony Hopkins to Play Hitchcock?
Sir Anthony Hopkins is slated to add another iconic character to his impressive resume. He's attached to play legendary director Alfred Hitchcock in a biography of the man.
"I better put on some weight," Hopkins joked patting his tummy.
The film would center on a short period of Hitchcock's life but reflect his overall struggles. "It's about the making of 'Psycho' but it's not about the making of 'Psycho' such, but how Hitchcock felt such a failure all his life. He felt such a loser all his life. And he had a very troubled relationship with everyone. A very complex man, a very private, quiet man. There are all rumors about his life and his relationship with his wife. I know nothing about the guy but this script is a good script."
There could be some delays on the project, both legal and artistic. "I think we were supposed to be doing it in May but then they pulled the script back again because they had to check with the Hitchcock estate. And also they wanted to rewrite it again, I don't know why. I hope they don't rewrite it out of shape because it was pretty good when I read it."

ChinaRises writes: on Apr 08 2007 08:02 AM Hopkins stared in a fantastic biopic not many people saw called "Shadowlands" about CS Lewis. It was directed by Richard Attenborough, who aside from playing Dr. Hammond in the Jurrasic Park movies is also the king of great biopics, he also directed Gahndi, Cry Freedom, and Chaplin--all great film biographies. They should definitly bring him in to direct. I hope they don't try to make a rockstar biopic out of Hitchcock's life just because thats whats popular. Biopics latley have goten so cliched-- they start out with big dreams, they get decadent, they fall---its the same theme over and over again. I know that is a common struggle among all famous celebrities, but as an artform, biopics must find something new to say. (Reply to this) |

The "there are all these rumors" quote worries me a bit. A story about an artist of Hitch's stature and complexity can be compelling enough without chasing after bits of moldy old gossip. Let's show a little originality and integrity, people. (I also agree with you that "Shadowlands" was great.) (Reply to this) |

OneSoup writes: on Apr 10 2007 04:56 PM Sounds great! Although 'Psycho' is HUUUEEGELY overrated (there I said it), 'Rebecca' is my favourite movie of all time. I would rather see a biopic of that time period, when Hitchcock was trying to break the American market. (Reply to this) |

ChinaRises writes: on Apr 10 2007 06:13 PM In reply to this comment (#860635) Dont be ashamed, for a Hitchcock film, Psycho was way overrated, along with "The Birds". But it was very original for an American film, that kind of psychological suspense was only found in films from Europe at the time. "Rebecca", is undoubtably his best film also. Most Hitchcock fans would agree. But I did HATE Notorious, which most of his fans seem to revere. (Reply to this) |

UncleCharlie writes: on Jun 30 2007 05:28 PM What Hitchcock fans are you talking about, "ChinaRises?" Certainly most Hitchcock fans nor critics would call "Rebecca" "undoubtedly his best film." It's a great film, hugely entertaining, one I could watch again and again, but it's very unlike Hitchcock's usual style in subject matter, film technique, etc . It's far more a David O. Selznick movie than a Hitchcock film. "Notorious," "Read Window," "Psycho," "The Birds," "Strangers On A Train," "Shadow of a Doubt," "North by Northwest," "Vertigo," are brilliant Hitchcock movies. What's more, you comment that "Psycho" and "The Birds" were vry original "for an American film" because "that kind of psychological suspense was only found in films from Europe at the time" is complete rubbish. Hitchcock virtually invented the psychological suspense film and had been making them -- in America -- since the '40s. Maybe you just don't really like or understand Hitchcock. But back to the subject of the thread. Making a film about Hitchcock at the time of "Psycho," especially with Hopkins as Hitchcock, is just a phenomenal idea. He had so much to prove with that film that no one wanted him to make and took tremendous risks. Clearly, reading some of these posts, he was way ahead of his time. On other boards and on the net, Mr. Hopkins is reportedly going to be joined by fellow Oscar winner Helen Mirren as Mrs. Hitchcock. Great casting. (Reply to this) |
