"Speed Racer" Nabs a Racer X
by Scott Weinberg | April 20, 2007
Discuss Article
By now you've probably heard that Christina Ricci has joined the "Speed Racer" cast, but it looks like Fox and the Wachowski Brothers have found their "Racer X" villain. Fans of the TV series "Lost" will no doubt applaud the signing of...

...Matthew Fox as the "Speed Racer" baddie. (Movie fans will recognize Fox from his appearances in "We Are Marshall" and "Smokin' Aces.") Sources indicate that Mr. Fox will do the movie while on his summer break from "Lost." Additionally, Australian actor Kick Gurry is in talks to play a hippie mechanic named "Sparky."

Fox and Gurry join a cast that includes Ricci, Emile Hirsch, Susan Sarandon, and John Goodman. "Speed Racer" should be hitting theaters next summer.

Cool, Matt Fox should make for a good Racer X.

Cool....
I must say, I'm not a fan of Lost but I think Matt Fox is a pretty great actor. Also, I love the Wachowski Brothers. I am intrigued to see what this movie will be like.

Why?
Why is there any interest in this? Just another disaster waiting to happen and taking a ding out of the reputations of everyone involved. How can this in any, way shape or form come close to capturing the original? There is so much about the animation, the voices and the whole kind of wonderfully cheesy atmosphere of that whole show that just should be left out of the hands of another money-grabbing misguided Hollywood studio. Shame on anyone with an iota of talent getting involved in yet another scam on the public.

i have to agree with you. i've never been a fan of the wachowski brothers anyway, but this idea sounds terrible no matter who gets their fingerprints on it.

That's what I love about this site, the positive attitudes. So nice that you can predict this will be a mess without have seem one still, concept, or frame of film from the project. I'm glad you guys weren't around during Alexander Graham Bell's time. "Talking across wires to each other? How can that possibly match the writing of letters? You should drop this ridiculous idea at once."

i totally agree that this site is too full of negative opinions based on zero evidence. all i'm saying is that there needs to be more creativity than a movie adaptation of "speed racer".

are you seriously equating what is likely to be a flavor of the week movie with the invention of the telephone? that's a bit of a stretch.

i may not be a big wachowski fan, but they are talented. why use your talent on this movie? do something original, or at least adapt something that needs to be made.

I can't wait to see this movie! Love the Wacho brothers! and yes there is too much negativity on this site and everywhere else on the internet...and the planet. and sure these same negative jerks will continue to hate the movie even after it comes out, but if it's anything like the Martrix: Reloaded car chase then I'll be happy. (l loved that whole movie, go ahead and bash me!)

Racer X is not a villan.

If they can get somthing that simple wrong, then there is plenty of reason do doubt the rest of it imo.

OVERHEARD AT A 2006 WARNER BROTHERS MEETING
“Anyone up for a remake of Cannonball Run?”

“Nah, that’s even too lame for today's movie audience.”

“Okay then, why not update Cannonball Run, call it Speed Racer and have Burt Reynolds as Speed Racer, Sally Field as Chim Chim and cast that fat guy John Goodman in Dom Delouise’s character. They're desperate enough.”

"Isn't Burt too old for the part of Speed Racer?"

"Not if we ask WETA to make him look younger with CGI."

“Mr. Wachowski, you’re a genius! Do you think that your brother Andy would help you direct it?”

“Oh my God, yes! He’s been depressed ever since we did The Matrix Revolutions. You’ll get him for a song.”

“Well congratulations my boy, Speed Racer is yours. Now be a good lad and get me another drink.”

"Yesss Sirrrrr!!!!”

Y'know rotten tomatoes isn't as bad as imdb has gotten. At least people are just stating their opinion on here and not trying to start fights on internet. Completely pointless, if ya ask me.

But, yeah... looks like a good cast and the Wachowski bros have put out a couple good movies, but is this really expected to succeed? Guess it's all in how they're going to sell it.

No, I wasn't equating the two, it was an absurdity used to make my point about the prevelent negativity. And who's to say a movie of Speed Racer won't be a lot of fun and make a lot of money. After all, who would have thought a movie based on a theme park ride would have been any good and so popular?

Do something that needs to be made? When you come right down to it, no movie NEEDS to be made. Even the most uplifting, inspirational movie ever didn't need to be made. But as far as Hollywood is concerned, the movie that needs to be made is the one that stands a chance of making money, and I think SR probably falls into that category.

i guess you're not an artist then. "something that needs to be made" is very real. i hope to be a film maker, and i have ideas that absolutely need to be made. it's about wanting to share something with the world.

but you're right, it's also a business.

Racer X is Speed's long lost brother. He's hardly a villain since he's always pulling Speeds butt out of the fire. He's more like Han Solo than Darth Vader. Who writes this crap anyway?
