Raimi Confirms Another "Spider-Man" Trilogy
by Fred Topel | April 22, 2007
Discuss Article
With "Spider-Man 3" nearing its opening and the lead actors and director’s contracts up, the fate of a second trilogy, or even a fourth film, is up in the air. Sam Raimi confirmed that the studio, Columbia Pictures, is interested in making parts 4, 5 and 6, but he would only come back if he could maintain the same passion.

“If I didn’t think I could do it fantastically, than I should step aside and let a younger director come in who loves the character and said he could do it with the greatest passion on the earth,” said Raimi.

With reports that Tobey Maguire said he would absolutely not do a fourth film, Maguire himself expressed no such feelings. He said he would consider it if there was a great story and Raimi and other cast members were back. So what of those other quotes?

“I’m not sure,” said Maguire. “That’s not what I’m saying now. I think early on through one and two I always imagined this as like three and out, lIke I’d do three and that would be enough for those. I’m not saying I will do a fourth one at all. I’m saying I’m not committed either way and we’ll see what happens.’

Weighing in on the Tobey Maguire casting debate, Raimi would have trouble recasting if he retained the helm. “I would have to make that choice based on what the story is and what the characters are. It would be very hard to be involved without Tobey and Kirsten for me at least.’

For Marvel producer Avi Arad, it is inconceivable that Spider-Man would end for any of the above reasons. “You have to look at it as Spider-Man is over 40 years old, in so many media from animation to comic books to graphic novels, maybe Broadway, video games, probably the most successful video games of all time,” said Arad. “So the character is bigger than all of us. I think we’d rather continue of course with Sam and the whole team. We’ve been together for a long time. The fact is that the character will endure. Spider-Man survived, believe me, bankruptcies, bad economies, you name it. And it’s around and alive and bigger than ever.”

Long Live Spiderman!
Well I hope he stays, but maybe they could do a Bond type thing and have different people play Spiderman every so often. I mean, economically the movies make 4535 trillion dollars worldwide so they are going to make more, but their actors are going to get too old. I mean Toby is 31 now i think, and he plays a character just starting college whos probably 21?

My Point is the Spiderman franchise should not be tied to any one person, the Spiderman franchise should follow Bond and be bigger than any one actor or producer or director.

Spider-man will make money no matter who is in it or directs it. I really think it should take at least a 5 year break before the next one comes out. That will give it time for someone to come up with some better storylines.

When asked about James Franco, Raimi's reply was "Who?"

Sure Spidey has 40 years of stories, but how many are worth turning into movies? No one wants to see a clone saga trilogy. They should probably let it end for now and come back a few years later and do a follow up (picking up years after the last Spider-Man 3, that way if they get new actors it won't sting as much). Kind of like Star Wars...except, you know...better.

If Dunst doesn't want to reprise her role as Mary Jane, now might be a good time to introduce Felicia Hardy to the series.

From what I'm reading from these comments, you guys are seriously underrating James Franco. However, I get the hint that the reason Raimi did not mention Franco is because perhaps, he dies in the film.

Why should I STFU? You might as well show me a note from her mom saying how lovely and talented she is.

No director is going to throw his actors under the bus.

I think three movies is enough. If more movies were made then there's the risk of the series falling into formula and facing the risk of overkill.

While i agree to a point, it should be noted that the Harry Potter series is avoiding this pitfall with grace...

lol true, cabezone. And it's so obvious a point that it should go without saying. Sadly, here on RT these things just gotta be said. To be fair, Dunst is no terrible actress by any measure. And she's not that annoying onscreen when the part is right. In other words, she's no Katie Holmes. But she's been miscasts as MJ ever since the beginning. Just like Anna Paquin as Rogue (far worse). And six more movies respectively will not change the fact that these two girls are living proof that even casting directors can make stupid mistakes.

That's an agreeable point, but maybe if they had one or two more Spider-Man movies and then give the series the Batman Begins treatment, then I would be pretty excited.

I just realized that if Tobey Maquire bails, they can just get Milo Ventimiglia to replace him. Voila!

i can't think of another villain or auxiliary story line, so another trilogy is a bad idea.

I think a good idea for #4 would be to introduce Man-Wolf and Kraven. They set up Man-Wolf in part 2 and the story is already there for the taking. It would also allow J.K. Simmons to expand and flush-out the role of J. Jonah Jamison.

Lizard Man! They got him showing his face in two movies from this first trilogy. They should start the fourth film with him.

That's pretty much all there is the Jameson isn't there? He gruff, angry and talks real fast. Oh and he dislikes Spiderman. That's pretty much all I've seen from 20 years of his character in comics and cartoons.
