First Look at Nicole Kidman Back in "Australia"
by Scott Weinberg | May 03, 2007
Discuss Article
It's not exactly the sort of movie we normally cover here at RT Newsday (mainly because it doesn't have a superhero, a zombie, a priate, or a wizard in it) but Baz Luhrmann's "Australia" is shaping up to be an epic of "Gone with the Wind" proportions. Plus Nicole Kidman's in it, and she sure is cute.

In the $120 million Fox production, Kidman will play a post-WWII upper-class English woman who finds herself in possession of a massive Australian cattle ranch when her husband dies. Apparently this ranch is "the size of Belgium." The actress will be returning to a part of Australia she last visited 18 years ago while making "Dead Calm," which was definitely one of her "breakout" roles -- and not just because she got naked in it.

And if you're a fan of Aussie actors, "Australia" should be your favorite movie of 2008: Hugh Jackman, David Wenham, and Bryan Brown are only a few of the players. (Safe bet that Paul Hogan won't be around.)

Anyway, The Telegraph has the first shot of Kidman in character, and it's attached to a pretty solid article on the current state of the project. Last time Luhrmann and Kidman worked together, the result was "Moulin Rouge," which (god's honest truth) is a movie I absolutely love. So obviously I'm a little curious to see how this one turns out.

$120 million budget!?!? My Lord, how is that possible for a movie like this? This is starting to remind me of the overblown borefest that was Cold Mountain

Nicole Kidman is not cute by any stretch of the imagination. Sorry mate. Anyone who believes so needs to get out in the world and actually meet a girl. 80% chance any girl you pick up off the street is a lot more appealing to the eye than Nicole Kidman.

Plus she can't act. I can condone ugly actors/actresses if they're worth watching, but Nicole Kidman is a very boring and unconvincing actress. She is either remarkably quiet or alarmingly loud in any role she's given.

And lastly, this looks to be a mind-numbingly dull story. We've had good westerns before and their era is over. Let us not tarnish their legacy with these knock-ups that we're forced to tolerate.

Would that 80% of the world were as attractive as Nicole Kidman, you're living in a fantasy land if you think that is anywhere close to being true and I for one don't think they'll ever completely stop making Westerns. Sure they probably won't ever reach the peek of their hayday again, but there are still fantastic westerns being made all the time. It's a fasinating part of history.

i agree with your comments except for: "We've had good westerns before and their era is over."

i'm writing one. i hope audiences will accept one more!

and they've made a small comeback lately. see "The Proposition" and the upcoming remake of "3:10 to Yuma".

Horror movies nowadays also are terrible. But that didn't stop Cabin Fever and The Descent from being made. There are exceptions to every rule, and "New Age Westerns = Bad" is....well, no exception (pardon the somewhat unintentional pun). Go ahead and make your Western, it could end up reviving the dead-in-the-water Genre that Western has devolved into.

And no, Nicole Kidman isn't attractive. You can not fool me bigbrother, I will not succumb to your lies :(
