Roth Wants Full Length "Thanksgiving" for "Grindhouse 2"
by Fred Topel | May 04, 2007
Discuss Article
Despite problematic box office results, fans are still clamoring to see the fake trailers from "Grindhouse" as feature films. Edgar Wright has plans to expand "Don't," and Eli Roth thinks his "Thanksgiving" would make the perfect double feature.

"I already talked with Edgar Wright about Edgar doing 'Don't' and me doing 'Thanksgiving,'" said Roth. "We're talking to Dimension about it. I think they're still trying to figure out 'Grindhouse 1' before we think about 'Grindhouse 2,' but I've already been working on the outline for it and I would do it in a heartbeat."

An aficionado of '80s horror films, Roth would do it old school style. "The catch is that me and all my friends who are in our 30s, we all have to play high school students, because that's how they did it in '80s horror movies."

Roth could write a full script for "Thanksgiving," but the outline is likely to be sufficient. "We have the outline, the story ideas but part of the fun of Grindhouse is actually not having a script. I wouldn't want to write it too detailed. You've just got to work out the kills and then see who's around and grab a camera and have fun."

The director has no fears about the "Grindhouse" label, even though The Weinstein Company seems blindsided by the public response. "My feeling is that three and a half hours, it was a long time at the movies for people. The movie itself was three hours and 15 minutes and then there's 20 minutes of trailers and then parking and everything, it suddenly became a four hour evening for people. So there's only so many times you can show it in a day and a lot of people getting off work, it was tough for people to find the time to see it. The people that saw it loved it. People were going crazy for it and I think that 25 years from now, everyone will talk about the classic movie Grindhouse and no one will talk about, the words box office disappointment won't even apply. I think the guys made a brilliant film and they should be commended for it and they took a risk."

i think "Thanksgiving" made a good trailer, but i don't know about full length.

and as far as "don't", i say don't. it was an okay trailer idea, but not a good full-length one.

If there are more cheerleaders on trampolines, I'm there. ;-)

But yeah...I don't know how they could stretch these premises out without it being too overdrawn.

I loved the Thanksgiving fake trailer, and I for one would definitely like to see a full length Thanksgiving. I think it could be absolutely hilarious. I hope they do it.

Exactly, Eli! This has pretty much my defense to everyone who has been shit-talking "Grindhouse" (most of who are just haters and without actually having seen it) or likes to keep pointing out its disappointing box office.

Box office and quality have nothing to do with one another. Just because a lot of people didn't go see it doesn't mean it wasn't a blast. Their loss. It will be an instant cult classic come DVD and, knowing what I was into in high school, this is the kind of movie that will be sought out by teens and fanboys alike for decades. Bring on the sequel, just spend less (why does the budget for something that revels in low-budget have to cost 50+ mil; hell, why does it have to be more than 20?), shorten it up a tad (though I don't think you can blame the film’s length alone - 3 hr movies often do big box office - this is niche programming and maybe there are only $30 mil worth of people in that niche that will go out to the theatre to catch experiments and throwbacks like this) and don't assume it will help save your studio with its grosses and the failure stigma should be gone. These directors need to get back to their roots in that they made smart, original, badass little movies cheap and then were blown away when the sold $30 mil worth of tickets.

I LOVE THE IDEA!!!
They may not have made near as much as they wanted in the box office but I think with the success of Grindhouse on DVD they will greenlight a sequel. BossFan was right when he said the people who are dogging it are the ones who didn't see it. I loved it and every single person that I talked to that have seen it loved it also. I thought the fake previews were great so I am very excited to hear that they will be maid into full lengths! As long as they keep that same style I think it will be great! 3 and a half hours or not!!!

Yeah, I'll second that. Reservoir Dogs anyone? Holy BALLS that's a good movie and it cost $1 to make. (Comparatively speaking.)

I'd love for a Grindhouse 2. My friends and I thought about how some of those trailer should be made into full length films for a sequel. That'd be incredibly badass, especially since we've already seen the trailers for the movies. I don't agree with the two movies though, Thanksgiving I think would be fun, but the other one should be Machete. I realize there are already talks about this being a full film later on but it should be a part of Grindhouse 2.

Thanksgiving + Machete... I'd be in heaven. Plus if they showed even more trailers that'd be awesome. I pity the people who haven't seen Grindhouse because it was easily one of the coolest and most original movie experiences I've had.

If Mark Bakunas of Bakunas And The Essential Elements has a starring role as the detective, I'm so there.

C'mon Werewolf Women of the SS! That was by far my favorite trailer at Grindhouse. I'll see anything they bring on, as long as it can keep true to the first Grindhouse (man I loved that movie).

I'm sorry but I'm sure Machaete would be a better full length feature than thanksgiving. I forget the name of the actor but he's been in a few Rodroguiez films and he is underrated. As for Thanksgiving being the second for the double feature?..........Ehhhhh maybe. But I'm pulling for machete

Keep the budget low low and you're sailing....Grindhouse was great but expensive....there'd be more laughs if the thing was uber ghetto. Ghettoize the mothersucker

GRINDHOUSE was fantastic. Most who disagree probably haven't seen it. I just hope the DVD release is the same as the theatrical version.

Grindhouse was an awesome movie, but let's not soil the memory by making shitty sequels. I have faith in Edgar Wright, even if a full-length "Don't" may be a bit of a reach, but Eli Roth is just a bad filmmaker.

I say let's leave it alone and not make a franchise out of it.

What's he talking about people in their 30s played high schoolers in the 80s? They still do. Isn't at LEAST one of the girls on Friday Night Lights like 28 and playing a high school cheerleader? If he really wanted to be over the top cast like people in their mid-40s then we've got something going. Maybe dig out the 80s Brat Pack for this one.

Well said! In 25 years, Grindhouse will be the Woodstock of the movie industry; everyone who was alive at the time will claim to have been there on opening weekend.

This seems to make sense, four "fake" movie trailers only to be paired together into Grindhouse double-feature movies. All of them seem to be hilarious in terms of plot so as long as its funny and shocking, I'll be satisfied. Just please put in an intermission! Our bladders thank you!
