Lucasfilm Clarifies New "Star Wars" Projects
by Scott Weinberg | May 23, 2007
Discuss Article
Fox's Roger Friedman was all sorts of confused when he announced that George Lucas was planning a pair of "Star Wars" TV movies, and now we have the official confirmation to prove it.

Mr. Friedman, who claimed that "the two extra films will also be made for TV and probably be an hour long each," was referring to the pair of "Star Wars" TV series that George Lucas has been talking about since "Revenge of the Sith" hit theaters: The CGI-animated "Clone Wars," which should hit the airwaves sometime next year, and the live-action series which we might not get to see until 2010.

From the lips of Lucasfilm spokeman Steve Sansweet: "George and [Star Wars producer] Rick McCallum were just now starting work on a live-action series. A drama. That will probably be coming out in 2009 or 2010. He is actively at work on both of those. But the CG-animated series is more adult. It has a lot of humor in it. It is very cinematic. We will be talking about that for the first time at the Celebration."

That celebration will take place at the Star Wars Celebration event, which starts on May 24th.

though this could work if he tried.......... i really think he should quit on star wars........... there he made 6 movies and the last three that he made sucked compared to the originals (yes even number three i just thought it was no better then the other two)............. just do some original idea and leave star wars alone please.

I also read in a recent newspaper article that Lucas also plans to rerelease the original star wars films into theaters in 3-D. He may not go through with it though, although it stated that he is strongly considering it.

The live-action show as the potential to be one of the most amazing shows ever. the possibilities are endless in the Star Wars universe. they just need to give the show the right treatment. Lucas should put it in capable hands backed by a staff of great dramatic writers. i mean, look at how amazing Battlestar Galactica is. the Star Wars series has the makings, but will they pull it off? at this point i'm saying it could go either way.

The live action series has potential in being a success. Battlestar Galactica was mentioned by ndrage85. The live action Robocop series was okay. The Sarah Connor Chronicles pretty much ruined the image that was in T2.

I know it would be easier to make in CGI, but I think all things Star Wars are just more fun to watch in real life. I'm really looking forward to this, but I hope it doesn't get picked up by Sci-fi.

Anyone else share either of these opinions?

Actually from what I heard all 6 movies are going to get the 3D and re-release treatment. Can you imagine some of the big battle sequences from the prequels in 3D?? The lightsaber battle from Ep I, the arena stuff from Ep II, a whole lotta stuff from Ep III. Crazy-ness.

I still say time will change the view of the prequels; once the guys from the '77 days get old and the younger generation gets a better voice in media outlets...also, once people wake up and see what the prequels were meant to be.

I heartily agreed the prequels were such a waste, especially when the story could have been much better.

Why another Clone Wars series? Haven't they flogged that stuff to death by now? Why not like the adventures of young Yoda or something? Something more interesting that no one even in the book universe has really done. A series could be good assuming Lucas doesn't have to micromanage the entire thing into the ground a story and and let it go to people that know how to do TV.

Christ, after those last three film debacles what Star Wars fan would want anything more from this worn-out franchise...

Hell, Lucas, with the recent spat of remakes why don't you just go back and "reimagine" the first three movies? New cast, new CGI, etc. Just you stay away from the director's chair...PLEASE!

I agree the younger generation who enjoyed the prequels will get their voices heard someday. Right now we have to deal with these whining cynics. Lucas never had a chance with this '1977 generation'. They treated him like a god so anything less than perfection is a failure to them. If Revenge of the Sith wasn't even good enough for some of these redundantly negative jerks it just shows what kind of individuals they are in real life. I was dissappointed by the Phantom Menace but you have to be dead and cold hearted to not enjoy Revenge of the Sith. God help these callous bastards.

why WOULDN'T they put it out in 3d? it'll make more money for lucas...i'd be shocked if he DIDN'T do it.

bertrumer....whatever, i think you're delirious if you think Sith was any good. i've seen better cgi in tv shows...ON PBS, i've seen better acting in porn...and the ONLY thing that was good about it was it was hilarious to watch lucas make such a dreadful piece of crap. i actually started crying because i laughed so hard when vader screams out "noooooooo" at the end. C'MOOOON, that was icing on the cake of craptacular. it was Gigli-esque man...get over it

It's true, the prequels were far from being as bad as people make them out to be. It's the nature of fanboys, we love and hate, nothing in between. But "go help these callous bastards"??? Is that necessary? I wasn't born into Star Wars, and I don't like the prequels. Does that mean I'm "dead and cold hearted"? I don't think so. Honestly, if those prequels weren't named Star Wars, two things would happen: They wouldn't get the hate they would, and no one would be talking about them because they would be considered pretty standard sci-fi fare.
