"Iron" Bits: Favreau Speaks and Villain Buzz
by Scott Weinberg | May 30, 2007

Might as well get used to us talking about "Iron Man," mainly because you guys love the comic book movies, but also because I really can't wait to see what this flick turns out like.

As he's likely to do from time to time, director Jon Favreau did some MySpace blogging to share a few words with the fans: " I have been relatively quiet for two main reasons. First, I feel like the General of a huge military campaign. I have no life other than Iron Man. Between the script, sets, effects, shooting and editing, I am completely monopolized.

The second reason is, you Iron Man fans are like criminal profilers..." (Check our source for the whole post. MySpace can be so slow sometimes.)

On the same page, hidden behind magical inviso-spoiler text, is some pertinent information regarding the Stane character (who'll be played by Jeff Bridges) and a potential switcheroo for the adventures of the evil Mandarin character.

No Mandarin? That's good. I don't like him anyway.

Iron Man, along with Hulk and sometimes FF, suffers from a common comic syndrome that's not being evaluated when these movies are announced: lame/boring villains. Superman and Ghost Rider have this issue too.

Spider-Man, Batman, X-men... no issues.

I couldn't agree more. That is a problem facing a lot of the B-List superheroes. Daredevil has no real villian. Neither does Elektra. Come on, Bullseye? FF does have Dr. Doom, and that is about it. Hulk, no one really, other than the army. Iron Man is a great character, but does anyone care about Mandarin?

I do disagree about Superman. He has a decent list of baddies, just no one at Warner Bros has the vision to look past the obvious.

Kingpin is a big villian, they just screwed him up.

Well, Hulk has Abomination, Bi-Beast and Leader, which are good ones. But other than that, yeah. Not that it really matters, though, since most of these characters like Hulk, Daredevil and FF fight villains from other people's rogue galeries.

I am a little impressed/curious to what they're doing with Silver Surfer in the new FF: making him a mysterious character that could or could not be a threat, which I guess jives with the comics way back when the metallic guy was introduced. Nice decision there.

I'm pretty excited about what they're doing with the Silver Surfer in FF4 ROTSF. I honestly think that movie is going to really surprise people.

Plus Silver Surfer has cooler villains, now they can just incorporate his world into theirs... even though I'm pretty certain the Marvel universe is shared by all its comic book heroes. (When will we get to see an arrogant Spider Man show up at the Fantastic Four, announcing he wants them to pay him fight crime?)
