Who's Up for Ridley Scott's "Monopoly"?
by Scott Weinberg | June 19, 2007
Discuss Article
Not too long ago we heard that Hasbro wanted to turn a bunch of their properties into movies. Now they seem to have ensnared Sir Ridley Scott into their plan.

According to News.com.au (who source their story from The London Times), Ridley Scott has indeed been approached to direct the comedic thriller known as "Monopoly." Hasbro's agency (William Morris) promises to overload the movie with high-profile movie stars. Apparently they've already offered roles to Scarlett Johansson and Kirsten Dunst.

Here's my favorite part: "Hasbro, which claims that Monopoly has been played by 750 million people since the 1930s, wants the film to feature "sexy young people" in an attempt to attract teenagers to board games." Right, because the movie will be SO GOOD that it'll inspire people to run home and play Monopoly. Ha.

Regarding Ridley Scott's involvement, I'll believe it when I see it. On the screen, I mean.

Wouldn't be ironic if there's a video game tie-in to go along with the movie?

How the hell can they make this a movie? When is the Horror film Hungry Hippos or action-packed Chutes and Ladders coming out??

Here we don't call it Chutes and Ladders... it's "Snakes and Ladders" ... in which case, the movie has already been made... they called it Anaconda.

"Ants in the pants" would make a terrific horor movie.

What's next, movies based on card games? How about Poke Her and 5 card Studs?

This movie might be watchable with Sir Ridley Scott at the helm. I still have doubts on how the screenplay would work.

i tend to think this will probably suck, but Jason Alexander would make a good Mr. Monopoly, and, if they somehow have Scarlett Johansson in it & topless, I'll go see it. hell, I'd watch a movie about paint drying if Scarlett Johansson was in it topless.

If the late night talk show hosts and Jon Stewarts of the world go after this low hanging fruit, they really have no comedic skills left.

Well, it won't be the first board game made into a movie....Clue.

But atleast they could of sort of have a storyline with that.. And Tim Curry is hilarious!

This one... I'm not so sure.

Well...
I recall thinking the same thing when they said they were going to make a movie based on the pirate ride at Disneyland.

And if Ridley Scott has no problem attaching his name to it, he must have seen some kind of script worth shooting. The PR blurb from Hasbro is a joke, but with the chock-full-o-stars comment (although the only two examples are roles OFFERED to Scarlett and Kirsten) I can only guess they are trying for some kind of "It's a Mad Mad Mad Mad World" style film.

I have to agree that the previous poster's comment about Clue are dead-on - a fantastic film! But Clue has a plot built-in to the premise of the game. I guess Monopoly does too. But who wants to watch a movie about Donald Trump? Hmm. Maybe all those morons who watched The Apprentice.

I'm not enthusiastic about the prospects here, but I won't completely write it off yet. Stranger things have happened.

Not quite. Rounders is a movie about playing a game - and there are lots of movies about playing games out there. But not so many where "the game comes to life." About the only one I can think of where a deck of cards comes to life is Alice in Wonderland.

Off with their heads!

oh wow
who is going to play the wheelbarrow and top hat? i can already imagine that characters will be switched from boardwalk and park place (swanky digs) with stereotypical upper crust suburbanite couple who have to swap places w/ a poor but well spoken couple who have a ramshackle place stuck off of baltic avenue near the B & O RR..sort of like trading place, only they are not in control of their lives (the narrator is actually someone playing the game and controlling their lives)..of course set in atlantic city..

yikes, this is a bad idea, just stick to sequels of bad movies which have a built in following vs a monopoly movie..what's next, a movie based around tinker toys or those magnetic alphabetic letters we had as kids?!

If you were going to make a movie about Monopoly, how would you do it? I'd go for a cross between Rat Race and Brewster's Millions, and that's a concept I think could work. It also seems to be what they might be thinking of if they're trying to get an ungodly number of big-name stars. The only way you could afford to do that is to give each one minimal screen time. And the only way to make that work in a movie is to make it a madcap romp.

btw, I LOVE the idea of a Hungry, Hungry Hippos movie. I won't be surprised if the next board game to make the big screen is BattleShip. I probably won't go see Sorry or Scrabble, though.

I love Scarlett, but she's starting to be used in too many movies.

This project sounds like a bad idea, even with Scott at the helm.

This concept does NOT pass "Go", and definitely doesn't collect $200 dollars.
