Cast Update for Cruise & Singer's "Valkyrie"
by Scott Weinberg | June 20, 2007
Discuss Article
The last time director Bryan Singer and screenwriter Christopher McQuarrie got together, the result was "The Usual Suspects." Now they're back with a war-time thriller about an assassination attempt on Adolph Hitler.

You've probably heard a little but about "Valkyrie" by now, but AICN has a recent cast update that should make some movie geeks pretty happy. In addition to stars Tom Cruise and Kenneth Branagh, the film will also star Tom Wilkinson, Eddie Izzard, Bill Nighy, and Carice Van Houten. (IMDb also mentions that Patrick Wilson and Stephen Fry are on board, but we don't know that for sure just yet.)

Now that's a very cool cast. Combined with the premise and the filmmakers behind "Valkyrie," you can consider me very interested indeed.

Great supporting cast, but IMO Cruise is going to stick out like a sore thumb in this movie.

Cruise is still a fantastic actor, regardless of his off-screen crazy.

I've never big a big Cruise fan. I guess I just don't really like the type of movies he makes. I was impressed with his work in Collateral though.

As I said last time this movie was discussed here, I've done a lot of research into this film's subject matter. He really doesn't fit the character at all. But he puts asses in seats and I guess that's what matters.

I wonder if they'll go the Producers route and make it a musical. That could be fun :). Seriously though, great supporting cast and talent like that always seems to bring out the best in Cruise.

Sounds like a great cast, except for Cruise. He has ruined one too many movies for me with his over the top flamboyant acting. I'm sure he'll get all worked up in the intense moment and make the whole movie lame.

Tom must have slurped his way back from the brink to land this role.

This is interesting...
The July '44 assassination attempt against Hitler and the aftermath (and how it affected the outcome of the war) is actually a very compelling story in itself, but this sounds like it has a terrific cast to boot. If Cruise can get over himself and not make the movie revolve around him (no "renegade with a dead dad" schtick, please), this could be good. Hell, the cast might overshadow Cruise altogether.

Absolutley. He needs a movie that will make people forget about all the weird crap about him and it's been a little while since he was even IN a kick-ass movie.

Why Germany Hates Tom Cruise
I knew the Germans would not be happy with Tom playing this part. He should pass on this part. See link http://www.time.com/time/world/article/0,8599,1637564,00.html?cnn=yes
