Disney Halts DTV Sequels! Hooray!
Good news all around. Plus, get this: Disney CCO John Lasseter has called the upcoming Tinkerbell movie "unwatchable." Ouch.
After years of lame-o video-shelf sequels to some of the finest Disney classics of all time, John Lasseter has pulled the plug on the DisneyToons productions. No more "Fox and the Hound 2." No more "Cinderella 3." Theatrical sequels, sure. But no more DTV junk. Looks like the Mouse House is taking a turn towards quality over quantity these days.
The head of the DisneyToons division has been dismissed, and once "Tinkerbell" and the in-production "Little Mermaid 3" are finished, we'll be done with the stuff once and for all. I mean, really: How many parents are going to spin "101 Dalmatians 2: Patch's London Adventure" more than once?
As far as the "Tinkerbell" flick goes, it looks like there's still a lot of work to be done. Hats off to Lasseter for putting a stop to projects like "Meet the Robinsons 2: First Date" and "Chicken Little 2."
Plus the guy's also directing "Toy Story 3." My new hero.

dylan21484nj writes: on Jun 26 2007 08:02 AM i read the title and thought that Disney was canceling sequels to its old DTV specials, where they'd make music videos out of pop songs played to montages of their cartoons and movies. anyone else remember those? no? oh, nevermind. (Reply to this) |

selke99 writes: on Jun 26 2007 08:04 AM I read this a few days ago. While this is good news creatively speaking, the article (I believe it was Yahoo) said these direct to DVD sequels were netting Disney billions of dollars, so I'm surprised they would halt it. Hey, if people wanna buy crap, go ahead. (Reply to this) |

Warheart1188 writes: on Jun 26 2007 09:30 AM ABOUT TIME! All of these Disney sequels over the years have been pissing me off. They ruin the classics like Fox and the Hound and Cinderella with these lame ass sequels. I really think they should go back to 2D animation instead of this 3D CGI crap Disney is trying to pull off with everything. The Disney/Pixar movies are great but their incorporating CGI into their own cartoons! No more Mickey Mouse they we grew up with! Now we have a 3D Mickey who solves crimes like Dora the Explorer! WTF DISNEY?! Even Winnie the Pooh is CG now! Fuck that! I know I'm way too old to watch this stuff but when I see kids eat this shit up, I just pity them because they won't grow up with the Disney shows and cartoons and movies that we grew up with as kids. At least they halted the shitty sequels. Maybe they'll bring back the classic shows now. I can only hope. That'll be worth it to an adult to watch. (Reply to this) |

VML writes: on Jun 26 2007 10:02 AM In reply to this comment (#871144) I totally remember the DTV segments! That was a long ass time ago before Zoog Disney and that Hilary Duff crap. Anyway, I never really liked the sequels. Some were decent (LION KING 1/2 and BEAUTY AND THE BEAST: ENCHANTED CHRISTMAS) but still, most of them ruined the originals from having those "classic" qualities. I'm not longer an Atheist, for I believe in God now because of Lasseter pulling the plug on cheapquels! (Reply to this) |

Shatter24 writes: on Jun 26 2007 10:29 AM the darkside of the Eisner era Yay! I'm glad to hear Disney's cut the crap out. When I saw them starting to make them DTV sequels, I thought, "what a way to make money and cheapen everyone's experience with the original movie." Putting this to an end is killing off one of the final sad vestiges of the Eisner era at Disney. I do agree, I miss the hand-drawn fairy tale animation. What's keeping Disney from making a Rapunzel film, 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea animated, maybe a pirate animated film (Blackbeard anyone?), or an animated (Reply to this) |
