Zac Efron to Kick Off His Sunday Shoes?
by Jeff Giles | July 11, 2007
Blog Article | Discuss Article
Say what you will about Zac Efron, but the singing, dancing teen idol certainly isn't afraid of typecasting: not only will the "High School Musical" (and "High School Musical 2") star spend the summer shimmying and warbling as part of the cast of Adam Shankman's "Hairspray" remake, but he is in talks to hit the ceiling (or tear up this town) in a musical remake of "Footloose."

As film trends go, this whole "musical remake" thing is arguably more palatable than, say, torture porn; still, this project strikes us as something better suited for a cable network or the direct-to-video market. On the other hand, it isn't like the original "Footloose" is exactly hallowed ground, and it has been awhile since a Kenny Loggins-related movie has made it to the big screen.

Efron in next week's "Hairspray"

Efron's "High School Musical" director, Kenny "Newsies" Ortega, is slated to direct and choreograph the remake, and Dylan Sellers ("Agent Cody Banks 2: Destination London") will produce.

[And for you screaming fans who simply can't wait to get enough of Efron -- who's certainly making the most of the recent surge in film musical popularity -- check him out next week in "Hairspray." His Link Larkin is, like, the most!]

i can only do remakes like this if its a parody. this is ONE of the dumbest plots anyways, but it was the 80's...so it kinda worked. nothing really made SENSE back then anyways. can saturday night fever REALLY be far behind...

Oh no. My two least favorite things together. High School and Kenny Loggins. Someone kill me.

Yes. I want this remake. I hadn't watched the original in a while, and I sort of got bored of that one.

If you're under 25 or a girl, you know who Zac Efron is...and he's pretty good in Hairspray! By good, I mean hot. (I'm a girl.)

I (unfortunately) saw "Footloose" on Broadway - it was horrible and I can't imagine a movie version being any better. This is just further proof of the death of originality in Hollywood. Kill the number crunchers and briing back film-makers, please!

Had to also add the bit about Kenny Ortega -- director of Christian Bale's best musical newspaper-slinging cowboy performance ever, in "Newsies"!

I can't believe this guy is going to be Speed Racer. Every time i see anything about him, thats what i say. Is hollywood just one giant cabal, who's sole purpose is to assault everything i love? they can have footloose (it's meh to begin with) but give back Speed. Please

I'm a guy, and I'm under 25. I'm 24 to be exact. But I don't like musicals much.

And I know you're a girl Jen. It's pretty obvious!

Ummm actually he lost the lead in Speed Racer to Emile Hirsch. Meh. I would have cried seeing Christina Ricci make out with him anyway...

Oh, you kids and your youth...to be 24 again....

Wow, this is the most commenting I've ever done on a single post! It would be one about Mr. Efron that did it.

And I can't believe I'm actually commenting on someone I've never even heard of. And I work in the celebrity photography industry too.

As far as my youth...I've always been too serious to really enjoy that as much as others. I went to see Ratatouille the other day and didn't like it much. So maybe 24 isn't really as young as you think.

Jen your passion for Zac Efron scares me, and all those around you. For the ladies and gentlemen of the jury, let me cast your minds back to Cannes 2007. Jen and I are sat nursing a beer trying to make up our minds what to do that particularly fateful afternoon. "I know," says Jen, "Let's go to the Sicko press conference with Michael Moore just in case Zac Efron happens to stop by." And, later that evening, "I know," she beams, "Let's go back to the hotel; Zac Efron might be staying there RIGHT NOW."

None of this is made up.

They are remaking "Footloose," for god's sakes? What's next, a remake of "Breakin'?" I would much rather see that anyway, but noone will be able to fill the shoes of Turbo and Ozone.
