Shrek Films To End At Five?
But what if the fifth one makes huge money?
by Scott Weinberg | July 18, 2007
Blog Article | Discuss Article
By now we've already heard that DreamWorks plans to have a fourth Shrek movie in theaters by 2010, and that they want to then squeeze out a fifth film. But that, they promise, will be the last of the series!

A few months back, Shrek co-star Antonio Banderas let spill that there would be a fourth and fith installment, plus a separate spin-off flick for his own character, Puss In Boots. (And don't forget that Shrek Christmas special coming our way this winter.)

According to the Bloomberg News, the producers are all set to go on the fifth -- and allegedly final -- Shrek movie. But that's only if the money folks are still firmly convinced.

DW spokesman Rich Sullivan claims that while the "story has five chapters," the studio is so far only committed to one new sequel: "Based on the success of the first three films, at the very least, the next one, 'Shrek 4,' is warranted." Which is just another way of saying "Part 3 made huge money, so we're making Part 4. Ask us about Part 5 when that one comes out."

Shrek the Third has already more than quadrupled its $160 million budget with more than $600 million in worldwide grosses. Shrek 2 took in an insane $921 million back in 2004. And the very first Shrek didn't do too shabby either, making $484 million with a $60 million budget, according to Box Office Mojo.

To be totally honest, despite being a huge fan of the first Shrek, I'm starting to grow more than a little weary of the series by now. Maybe by 2010 I'll feel different. (And yes, the whole voice cast is coming back. You don't think Myers, Diaz and Murphy would miss their regular paychecks, do you?)

Geeze. Leave it at three please. There's a reason so many things come in trilogies. Things start to get really tired after 3.

they will make anything into a sequal these days...just the other day I was in blockbuster looking, and a movie I grew up with The Sandlot had 2 sequels right next to it, some ****ty looking ones at that. I read the back and the story according to the box was no different than the first one was. It pisses me off that they feel they need to mess with a classic like that just for a quick buck. They ruined Caddyshack 2, they never even needed a 2nd caddyshack, but there is one...

This is...old news? We knew they were planning a fifth Shrek in 2013. But the fact that its fate is uncertain is news, I guess.

I'm kind of indifferent. If Shrek 4 somehow succeeds (in terms of quality, that is), then I'll support the fifth. If 4 fails, then I won't. I kind of doubt they can recapture the magic of the first two, but if they can in the fourth, that means there may be hope for the fifth.

Please, please, please, if you absolutley must see Shrek 4, then wait until it's on cable. That way we won't have to have another Shrek, unless, of course, 4 is a vast (and much needed) improvement over Shrek the Third.

The sequels should have stopped in Shrek 2. Shrek the Third was made only to make money, because it is an uninspired picture.

yeah, i saw the Sandlot thing as well when i was at the Buster. i can't believe they made one sequel to that classic, the second sequel is even more unwarranted. Christmas Vacation 2...another major hit...ha

by the way, this isn't news...AT ALL. they've already said this awhile back. whine all you guys want...but 5 is already set in stone. anyway, the thing makes bajillions and even though the adult humor wasn't as crisp as the first two...it still made money and was kid friendly. it seemed alot more like a straight to dvd flick but again...makes money and the kids love it, and the marketing(unlike Rat) is gold. kids love the shrek toys...sorry but, its a seller.

It's my understanding that there were always supposed to be five. Pity they ran out of jokes after 2.

I'm not paying money to see it. I'll catch it when it doesn't go into box office receipts.

The third Shrek was so boring and the story was very thin, I liked the first film but the sequels are making me loathe the entire series. Please, Dreamworks, stop.

Some of these sequels are only succeeding because of the name, not the product.

Just cancel it now and get Shrek over with. It's not like there's supposed to be a monarchy in the cinema.

If they really are interested in this suceeding they need to find a way to bring back John Lithgow. He made the 1st film and the sequals have suffered for his absence. Say what you will about Justin Timberlake and his acting ability, John Lithgow he ain't and never will be.

There shouldn't have even been a Shrek 2. They're not that great of movies to warrant this many. But apparently the masses think that weak celebrity voice acting and pop culture references are brilliant. So enjoy, America. You're the ones demanding this drivel.

Gee, I hope 4 and 5 are as crap-tastic as 3 is. My girlfriend fell asleep in the theater and I almost did too. Let it go, Dreamworks. You're a funny man, Mike, but that doesn't mean we want or need Austin Powers 4 or 5 either...

Please.

You've worn out your welcome, Dreamworks. Oh, and you suck. In case you haven't noticed.

Don't suprimpose extreme crudeness and mediocrity on everyone. For once think about quality, not money. You could be a role model for Disney.
