G. I. Joe Movie Gets Mummy Director
Marching into production ASAP?
by Jen Yamato | August 12, 2007
Discuss Article
This just in: From the man who brought you the Mummy franchise comes the live-action adaptation of G. I. Joe!

Both IGN Movies and IESB reported over the weekend that Stephen Sommers, who wrote and directed the Mummy series and Van Helsing, will direct the Paramount-DreamWorks production.

Planned as a live-action film, G.I. Joe will be produced by Lorenzo Di Bonaventura, who also produced Hasbro's Transformers. Although IMDB lists G.I. Joe due in 2010, IGN reports that production may begin soon to avoid an impending Hollywood strike.

While there has been speculation as to what storylines the G.I. Joe film will follow, the reports assert that the script will combine both Skip Woods' (Swordfish) origin story and a script by David Elliot & Paul Lovett (Four Brothers).

Voice actor? It's going to be live action. And my guess is Snake Eyes will have to take his mask off at some point or this movie might be even sillier than I think it's going to be.

As long as there's COOOOBRAAAAAAA and shouts of COOOOOBRAAAAAA by COOOOOBRAAAAA Commander I'll be seeing it.

Sommers is going to destroy this as he did with Van Helsing.... Van Helsing could have been one of the best movies ever had it been don right.....

Van Helsing was one of the worst things I've ever seen. I don't like the Mummy movies either, but then again I didn't even like GI Joe when I was a kid. So yeah, this movie will be totally awesome.

Van Helsing could have been one of the best movies ever? Please be joking, that script couldn't have been saved by any director. As for the Mummy movies, they served their purpose as family oriented summer action movies, and that's what GI Joe is going to be, people expecting serious acting and intense action are retarded, it was a cartoon for gods sake.

Sommers is a horrible director. His movies have all been brainless cheese with horrible CGI. The Mummy Returns and Van Helsing have got to be two of the worst CGI laden "blockbusters" I have ever seen. While The Mummy Returns was simply a bad sequel with horrible CGI that breaks "The Stupid Little Kid" rule, Van Helsing was downright retarded and just a horrible, horrible piece of filmmaking. In a word, this guy is HORRIBLE!

My hopes are crushed.

Many of you may see G.I. Joe as a "Stupid little cartoon," but I am a die-hard fan, who collected the toys, read the comics and watched the cartoons. I knew that the movie wouldn't get a top-of-the-line director, but Sommers is too hokey. Granted, the Mummy had some great CGI, but G.I. Joe can't really rely on CG. It's not about magic or the supernatural. (C'mon, I know the cartoon had some, but the cartoon is not the only defintion of G.I. Joe.)

I won't cast out all hope, but I am disappointed.

Yo Joe!

Same voice actor for Snake Eyes? He never spoke, there was no voice actor for him.

As for Sommers directing, I don't know, everyone hated Michael Bay directing Transformers and I really liked how that turned out, so I'll reserve judgement on Sommers until I actually see the movie. I'm eargerly awaiting it as a huge G. I. Joe fan. Sgt. Slaughter as himself, haha. Yeah right, he's probably in his sixties now.

I just want to know what type of story will it be, and what characters will they put in. The main Joe's and the kick azz Cobra agents, that sexy Berrinus, or however you spell it. I was a big Storm Shadow and Snakes fan. Will they get a great fight scene. That whole ninja epic with them both was crazy to me.

This is bad, bad news for G.I. Joe fans. He will have little respect for the material, just like he had little respect for the classic horror elements of Van Helsing. Good luck.

Now that I think about it, shouldn't they have got Bay to direct this instead of Transformers?

While I'm not the biggest fan of this director, what do you mean he had little respect for the elements of Van Helsing? Whoever wrote that goddamn script should apologize to Bram Stoker for ****ting all over a great concept.

Yeah this sucks. I loved GI Joe more than Transformers but I sure did like me some Transformers too. Then Michael Bay had to come out and crap all over my childhood. Why don't they get either a younger first time director who grew up in the 80s and really liked GI Joe or a yonger director that is more interesting? Somebody like Donnie Darko's Richard Kelly comes to mind. He might make a giant mess of it but at least it would be an interesting mess (like Ang Lee's Hulk) or it could be great like Jackson's LOTR or Sam Rami's Spider-Man.
