Jon Stewart Hosting the Academy Awards
The envelope, please...
by Jeff Giles | September 12, 2007
Discuss Article
It appears next February's Academy Awards ceremony has found its host -- one who will be a familiar face for fans of the show.

According to a report at the New York Times, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences is bringing back Jon Stewart, host of the 2006 ceremony (as well as a little thing called The Daily Show -- maybe you've heard of it). Although the Academy's spokesman and Stewart's publicist both declined to comment, an announcement is scheduled for today.

The Gil Cates-produced ceremony -- which will mark the Oscars' 80th anniversary -- is scheduled for February 28, when it will air on ABC.

Stewart's a decent choice, but why aren't they choosing someone new?

He wasn't so good last time. Either that or the audience of stars didn't laugh too much at his jokes. Either way, the room felt kind of dead whenever he talked.

I don't quite understand Ebert's comment that Stewart was the equivalent of Johnny Carson in terms of hosting ability: he did seem constipated, like he would rather be anywhere else.

Yeah, I expect Colbert (and "John Oliver") is going to have a field day with this.

I actually really liked Jon Stewart. I'm glad they're bringing him back instead of Billy Crystal for the 9th friggin' time.

Isn't Jon Stewart more politically independent? (in that he makes fun of the right and the left?) Maybe I'm getting him confused with someone else. But that could be why the room was dead.

This is great news. I think Stewart deserves another shot at the Oscars again. Having one under his belt, hopefully he'll be better this time.

The Hollywood people were upset because Stewart was making fun of them, with Tom Cruise Scientology jokes and such. I think it's great. I hope he cuts them up some more.

Oh witherwings, do you seriously not know who he is?
Yeah, he didn't do so well last time, and neither did ellen.
Has Leno ever gotten to host? I don't remember. Why not let him? I don't really like Leno, but hell. Give him a shot.

Just throwing it out there... But if it was a new host, Chappelle or Sarah Silverman would shake things up. Otherwise, recycling Conan, Stewart, or Ellen for their second times around isn't that bad.

I think they should get Lisa Lampanelli or Kathy Griffith. Talk about shaking things up.

Just add Carlos Mencia in there and you've got the three worst comedians on Comedy Central.

If anything, witherwings, you're thinking of Steven Colbert. Jon Stewart is easily the most liberal comedian on television, alongside Seth Macfarlane.

I'd like to see Conan do it, he's nailed the Emmy's a couple times now
