Werner Herzog Taking Audiences on Antarctic Adventures
Director's latest doc bowing in June.
by Jeff Giles | March 13, 2008
Blog Article | Discuss Article
Throughout his career, Werner Herzog has shown a fascination with protagonists in impossible situations. For his latest film, he took his cameras to what might be the most impossible place on Earth.

Variety reports that Herzog's Encounters at the End of the World, the director's first documentary since 2005's Grizzly Man, has been given distribution by ThinkFilm and Image Entertainment in association with Discovery Films. Encounters, which debuted at the Toronto Film Festival last year, looks at "the daily lives of Antarcticans." From the article:

Herzog is known for visually stunning and insightful portraits that telescope the starkest of individual experiences into metaphors about the human condition. Here, lensing entirely on location, he explores the existence of people working in literally blinding conditions, as well as natural elements such as a volcano and, yes, penguins.

According to Variety, the film kicks off at the McMurdo Station research center, "with its yoga studios and ATMs," before venturing into the icy wilderness surrounding the South Pole.

Encounters at the End of the World is set to debut June 11.

Rescue Dawn sucked! Too bad for Bale on breaking the winning streak after that piece of crap. I've seen better POW movies in the 99cent dvd bin at kmart.

Right on Bruce. Rescue Dawn was definetely one of the best movies of 2007 and any film with Herzog's name on it automatically makes it a highlight of any year. Bring it on!

You are a POW of the mind. Best of luck in your escape, Donwillymo.

In the extras for Rescue Dawn, it was said that Herzog was such a task master in the Jungle that the crew mutinied. Can't wait to hear what kind of zany underwater ice caverns they had to wade through for this one.

Throughout that movie I wanted Zahn to start breaking out in Neil Diamond tunes and Jack Black to sing along...did that movie really portray such a hard struggle? Deiter Dangler escaped with barely a scratch. "I didn't get to use the bathroom and now I **** myself" this was the high point of the movie. Other than that it was hearing cavemen talk.

Well donwillymo, in case you didn't notice Midnight Express, Escape From Alcatraz and Shawshank Redemption are all stories about convicts being sent to prison for doing something wrong whereas Rescue Dawn is about POW's.

About the only thing that Midnight Express, Escape from Alcatraz and Shawshank has in common with Rescue Dawn is the fact that they are all very good but very different movies.

Herzog certainly can make a bad movie, like HERAKLES or GESUALDO (though they still have interesting moments) and to some extent THE WILD BLUE YONDER, but he's generally one of the finest filmmakers ever.

Hopefully ENCOUNTERS AT THE END OF THE WORLD gets decent promotion and distribution. I really want to see it in a theater!

Alright Dracus, I know who fell asleep during shawshank redemption lol. In the middle of the movie we find out that Tim Robbins character was in fact innocent as a fellow inmate reveals that he was cell mates with the guy who actually did the crime he was imprisoned for. 1 pt for me. As far as Hayes character in Midnight Express, ok so he tried to smuggle a little hash WOW! I mean maybe if it were heroin of coke then yeah but it's not like he was going to sell it to the kids on the streets back in the US! I mean what's worse killing other soldiers (innocent or not) in a meaningless war or a college student smuggling a little hash for recreational use. 2 pts. And as far as escape from alcatraz... ok so Morris was a bank robber (not necessarily no. 1 on america's most wanted) but the fact of the matter is that all of these characters had to fight these cruel and unjust obstacles whether or not innocent or guilty. Your previous response is irrelevant. Slam dunk. Who want it!

Werner the Hedgehog needs to stick to those German movies that no one even knows or cares about! Or get a better casting director. Zahn (Saving Silverman, National Security, Friends)!? Toby f'n Huss (reno 911, vegas vacation, Balls of Fury)!? Ok I get it Bale is a good Batman (whoopty whoop), but let's not get away from the actual movie in case here!
