Michael Bay Talks Transformers Sequel, IMAX Cut
Prepare to behold Megan Fox in all her IMAX glory.
by Jeff Giles | September 19, 2007
Discuss Article
Hoping for a Transformers 2? According to Michael Bay, it'll either happen right away...or not for quite awhile.

In a post on his official message board -- helpfully excerpted by the folks at SuperHeroHype -- Bay talks up the imminent IMAX cut of Transformers ("Freakin' AWESOME...I added some extra scenes"), then pauses to comment on the possibility of a sequel. From the post:

"'Transformers 2', well that's another story. Iching [sic] to work pre-strike (June) so I might jump ship and come back a year or so later cause people at the studio have been dragging for two months. Not sure why. I'll keep you informed."

Whether you loved or hated Transformers -- which hits IMAX screens this Friday -- we find it hard to believe that anyone honestly thinks a sequel is truly necessary, so maybe a delay will give everyone involved enough time to find another project worth pumping $150 million into. But we sort of doubt it.

Hey Bay.....people at the studio are dragging cause they don't want you to film the sequel!

a sequel isn't necessary? wow, thats one of the stupidest things i've ever read on here. yeah, i see no reason for a RIDICULOUSLY successful movie to have a sequel. one of the most entertaining flicks of the year...yeah no thanks, lets not do that. its necessary because you already have an established and SUCCESSFUL franchise. at least ONE sequel is warranted, just don't fall into the crap trilogy trap that seemed to gobble up a few franchises this summer.

Yes a sequel is necessary, Jeff. So they can make it bigger and better.

Seriously, dude.. of all the movies to hate on, this summer, Why Transformers? I think the vast majority agree that, love 'em or hate 'em, Bay tore the roof off not just because he had a crazy budget, but because he and the rest of the cast/crew gave a ****. We should be so lucky to have that more often.

Transformers sucked. I was so hyped to see this movie - I got to see it five days early because my friend is the manager at the local theater, and I was excited out of my mind.

But i was so disappointed with it. And im a Michael Bay fan! I'm with you Jeff. Leave the sequel alone.

Transformers definitely needs a sequel. I didn't mind Bay at the helm with the first to introduce the TFs with a bang (and he loves his action). The robots need more character development without any cheesy or cliche BS. Here's to TF2 with a new director (and not because I think Bay blew it, but because it needs a different direction with the characters that others are better at)!

The story itself asks for a sequel. At the end, Optimus Prime sends out a signal that the Autobots are to come to Earth, therefore expecting that there will be others arriving. That signal could just as easily be picked up by other Decepticons are Starscream is still unaccounted for.

Plus, it was wicked successful. I think you need a sequel here.

There's a vast majority out there who actually loved this movie. I've heard so many equate it to those films that come along everyone now and then that make you feel like you've just seen something amazingly new and unforgettable. Several people I spoke to equated it to Star Wars and Jurassic Park for instance. These movies aren't meant to be compared to "The Godfather" or "2001: ASO".

Given it's success, Transformers is now 100% critic proof, so despite what the nay-sayers think, it's the perfect candidate for having an ongoing story - i.e. sequels actually are warranted. That's why it worked a tv series you slow people.

I wouldn't be surprised to see Transformers 2 break all kinda of records - I mean if the first entry in the series can get the numbers it did... well we're talking something pretty special for #2. Take the Spiderman sequels for example, or even better, something like Pirates 2, a sequel to a surprise hit - it's sequel reached the billion dollar mark so damn quickly.

Transformers DVD sales will go through the roof too - I'd bet money on this.

No need for a sequel, okay to respond to that, I will now quote Adam Sessler "If I ever said anything that stupid I'd have to shave my ***, and kill myself" Seriosly though, this movie was loved by the VAST majority of people who saw it, Not to mention it was highly succesful. And as for the "Big 150 Million Dollar" budget Bay had, if you think about it, he actually didn't have alot of money to make this, if you compare it to the other summer movies. (EX:Spider Man 3 250 Million, Pirates 3 300 Million, Shreck 3 160 Million, and Evan Almighty 175 Million... WTF?) And the funny thing was that it looked 100 times better than all those movies. So yeah I'll definatly be seeing this on Imax this weekend (Missed out on 300, not missing this) and will be eagerly waiting for the release of the sequel.

I hear the studio's shifting their strategy for the sequel and are shooting to make a movie that isn't absolutely terrible next time.

Yes, Transformers was widely successful, and yes, it looked nice. But seriously, either teach Bay that human characters actually matter, or get a new director. I am almost positive that they will make a sequel, but I hope the sequel is better than the original.

The problem i thought was that he tried unsucessfully to make the characters more human, thereby the movie was seriously lacking in the action/adventure aspect that he is kind of known for. Armageddon blows this movie away in my opinion. Better dialogue and better use of comedy. It's like he forgot what he wanted to do so he was like "alright hide behind houses now. this will make the audience DIE!"

Yeah, I felt like dying alright.

Transformers had it's parts but it was not a Great film IMHO by any means. If they make another sequel it had better have a Prime and Megatron superfight. That poor excuse in the first one was extremely disappointing.
