Zack Snyder Developing The Last Photograph
Director adds another project to a crowded plate.
by Jeff Giles | October 12, 2007
Blog Article | Discuss Article
Zack Snyder has already taken audiences onto the battlefields of ancient Greece. Now, according to Variety, he's planning on taking them on "a journey...through war-torn Afghanistan."

Snyder is reuniting with his 300 team -- screenwriter Kurt Johnstad and Hollywood Gang Productions -- for The Last Photograph, which Variety describes as "a drama based on an original idea by Snyder." From the article:

Story revolves around a photograph that becomes the catalyst for a journey two men undertake through war-torn Afghanistan.

Before Snyder can get to Afghanistan, he'll need to complete work on Watchmen, as well as Army of the Dead, the Illustrated Man-inspired film being scripted by Joby Herald. Variety also lists an "action fantasy" titled Sucker Punch as one of the director's upcoming projects.

as much as i enjoyed 300, if snyder doesnt blow me away with watchmen, i think i'll hold it against him forever. i am hopeful that he can come through though.

With a story like The Watchmen's I don't think someone with the talent and respect for the source Snyder has will screw it up.

snyder is definately a talented visualist (is there such a word? probably not) and action director, but watchmen requires a subtlty that i havent see out of snyder, at least yet. i mean, movies about zombies and battle axes to the head arent exactly that subtle. but like i said i have faith in the guy...

Zach Snyder is a music video director. He's a guy who's big on visuals and little on storytelling. That's why he was right for 300, and terribly wrong for Watchmen. Just watch. It'll be the disaster we've all been waiting for.

While not much story I thought Dawn of the Dead had realistic characters.

I think Watchmen will at LEAST be better than V for Vendetta which will be grand in my book.

If you think Dawn of the Dead and 300 sucks, you're probably on the wrong website.

Good luck Snyder, while you can make flesh eating hordes of the undead and spartan warriors fun to watch, it'll be interesting to see how you can do with truly classic material.

Why would I be on the wrong website? This is a site where critics voice there opinion on films. This isn't the genre obsessed aintitcool or iesb.

i'm really wary of watchmen. i also hope the best, but zack snyder aside, lets look at hollywood's track record for any kind of adaptation, especially recently. i think watchmen is a difficult piece to adapt, because theres so much depth and complexity, that simply can't be fit into 2 hours.
i think the biggest key is the screen writers, what they get in, what they cut out. and if the rumor about the guys who wrote transformers being attached to this project is true, we all have something to fear.
i hope zack snyder is able to pull it off...

If this article read "Zach Snyder is focusing all his effort and attention to making Watchmen the best it can be, and isn't even thinking about what movies he will follow up with" then I would be feeling a little better about this Watchmen adaptation.

It didn't, and I don't.

oh goodness that puts yet another film on Snyder's plate. I hope he realizes that "Watchmen" is his biggest project to date with the biggest fanbase. i know some background information on the story, but i need to purchase the novel to fully understand the story and how complex it is. i sure hope Snyder puts all of his best efforts into this film, and if that means delaying his other projects, so be it. He needs to make it visually grand, and at least close to complex as the award-winning novel (god knows how hard that'll be)

Well that may be true but one of the things that made 300 a decent movie was how Snyder did a frame by frame reenactment of the comic which if you do with Watchmen you're guaranteed a decent film.
