It has sold more than 270 million albums and put over 30 million rear ends in theatre seats since 1973 -- and now, the music of ABBA is coming to the big screen.

That's right, men of America: Roughly four months is all you have left before your significant others start dragging you into darkened theaters to see Mamma Mia!, the Phyllida Lloyd-directed musical based on the Broadway sensation that was inspired by ABBA's endlessly popular songs.

How, you ask, could "Dancing Queen" or "Take a Chance on Me" form the basis for a full-length film? Soak in the synopsis:

An independent, single mother who owns a small hotel on an idyllic Greek island, Donna (Meryl Streep) is about to let go of Sophie (Amanda Seyfried), the spirited daughter she's raised alone. For Sophie's wedding, Donna has invited her two lifelong best girlfriends -- practical and no-nonsense Rosie (Julie Walters) and wealthy, multi-divorcee Tanya (Christine Baranski)--from her one-time backing band, Donna and the Dynamos. But Sophie has secretly invited three guests of her own. On a quest to find the identity of her father to walk her down the aisle, she brings back three men from Donna's past to the Mediterranean paradise they visited 20 years earlier. Over 24 chaotic, magical hours, new love will bloom and old romances will be rekindled on this lush island full of possibilities.

While I'm not a huge fan of musicels, there have been a few pretty good ones lately. Plus Streep is a god, so I will see anything she does, and Seyfried's pretty cool. I didn't know that Baranski was in this, good stuff.

Meh.

Even the "Hairspray" trailer looked fluffy, light and fun; this one seems like it's going to be filled with corny slapstick and "sentimental value" in between the (probably entertaining) musical sequences.

Oh, please... Such a useless division between male/female films...
I doubt there is one single straight satisfied with his sexuality man out there that hasn't enjoyed "gay" films like Hairspray and, probably Mamma Mia..

Maybe I'm not the best critic of this because I'm not a big fan of musicals (except for Avenue Q and Jersey Boys), but I saw/was forced to see Mamma Mia on Broadway and it kind of sucked. It was corny as hell. I couldn't believe they were making it into a movie!!

wasn't there a film that has the exact premise with the exact music by the exact band? i think its called Muriel's wedding, and it was made like what, 1992? shuffle this under "Remake",even though "Wedding" had a slightly darker premise. or perhaps "remake of a remake of a play with name of play"

Your ignorance, and ability to play on stereotypes a seventh grader would probably find mildly amusing, is astounding. I'm gay and I've never seen a Streisand movie nor do I enjoy music by Diana Ross. How about we act a little more maturely and keep our comments on the topic at hand. Mama Mia! A movie I have not yet made up my mind about. It definitely has a few things going for it:

1. Meryl Streep. One of the greatest actresses ever.
and
2. Amanda Seyfried. She gave a hilarious performance in Mean Girls.

I'll wait till I see the trailer and its tomatometer rating to make up my mind. I mean, jeez, I'd hate to get labeled "gay" for being interested in this movie. That would be just awful.*

Muriel's Wedding is nothing even close to the same as Mamma Mia! The darkly comic Muriel's Wedding was about an extremely lonely, dateless girl who steals money to get away from her humdrum life and attempt to realize a dream she's lived in her head for years.

Mamma Mia is a musical about a beautiful, already engaged to be married girl trying to figure out who her father is behind her mother's back, so he can walk her down the aisle at her wedding. The only similarity between the two is the poster...actually, very oddly similar.

That's like saying My Best Friend's Wedding and Father of the Bride are the same movie because they both deal with weddings. At least watch both films before you start comparing them to each other.

And AmericanEagle, thanks for jumping to the defense. I'm also not a big fan of Babs (although I did like Prince of Tides). I have to admit I like Diana Ross, but so what?

And donwillymo, if you have to wonder if you're gay for reading a movie article, then you've got some serious subliminal identity issues going on there. Better make sure you don't suddenly start walking with a bent wrist or talking with a lisp. (Believe it or not, very few gay people actually do that.)

It'll be a **** film, but with Pierce Brosnan, Colin Firth, and Stellan Skarsgard, not to mention Meryl, it's going to be entertaining. I'd say a solid C /B-.
