Coens' Next Project: The Yiddish Policemen's Union

An adaptation of the Michael Chabon novel.

After the extraordinary success of No Country for Old Men, the Coen Brothers are hitting the books again, this time adapting Michael Chabon's The Yiddish Policemen's Union. The two will direct the film after their next announced project, the dark comedy A Serious Man.

Set in an alternate America where Jews have taken refuge in an Alaskan district after the collapse of Israel in 1948, The Yiddish Policemen's Union is a noir which follows detective Meyer Landsman as he attempts solving a murder, untangling a conspiracy, and generally reassembling his shambled life. This is the fourth Chabon novel to be adapted for the big screen, following Wonder Boys and the upcoming The Adventures of Kavalier of Clay and The Mysteries of Pittsburgh.

Joel and Ethan Coen's next film, Burn After Reading, starring George Clooney and Brad Pitt, will be released September 26. A Serious Man is slated for 2009 release, with Policemen's Union sometime after that.

Is that the DVD cover for NCFOM? Why do the designs so often suffer in trasition from the theatrical poster to DVD? The original poster is great, why do we need the classic star-head lineup?

That looks to be a patchwork dvd cover, not the actual one.

Anyway, this new film sounds promising. I haven't heard much about his other 2 films mentioned. The older Romance and Cigarettes, penned by the Coens, finally came out on DVD today as well, so I'm looking forward to watching that this week.

My faith in the Coens is restored. As we've seen, they can stumble from time to time, but No Country for Old Men is proof that they still have talent left. My hopes will remain high unless I'm given good reason not to expect much (which I doubt).

I think the typeface for the cover is great. And the reason for the name switchup is because Tommy Lee Jones is the biggest name and therefore warrants top billing. Stars actually have this type of stuff in their contract in case you didn't know (such as how certain names get 'single card' titles, meaning that their name appears by itself in the opening credits; and the really huge names come before the title of the movie). Anyway to continue; and they are on opposite ends because of the positioning of the picture, if you reversed it the framing would look weird. But still, in my opinion I think its sloppy work to do this. Surely some other angled shots of the actors could have been found.
