Roger Ebert Gets Back to Work
You can't keep a good critic down.
by Jeff Giles | April 03, 2008
Discuss Article
Roger Ebert is back on the beat.

The venerable critic has concluded his stay at the Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago, and on Tuesday -- his 41st anniversary as film critic for the Chicago Sun-Times -- he announced he was "at last" returning to writing about movies.

In a post at RogerEbert.com, Ebert told his readers that he "underwent a third surgery in January," suffered complications, and has yet to regain the ability to speak, "but I still have all my other abilities, including the love of viewing movies and writing about them."

Ebert also announced his intention to be at the opening night of the 2008 Ebertfest, scheduled to kick off April 23 at the University of Illinois, and reflected on his good fortune after making it through several years of ill health:

I am still cancer-free, and not ready to think about more surgery at this time. I should be content with the abundance I have.

Glad to hear Ebert's back to his old self again. I think Roeper was running out of guest critics to argue with on their show.

He won't be back on the show for the foreseeable future. He'll be writing reviews.

I've been watching Mr. Ebert's work since I was quite young and his show is certainly one of the main reasons I enjoy reviewing movies today. I'm so glad to see that we shall have more of his work to enjoy and I hope for an even further recovery. Thanks Mr. Ebert.

His film reviews are usually more enlightening and entertaining to read than the films themselves...

It's just too bad he doesn't think videogames are capable of being considered art due to their interactive nature... I have to irrationally hate him and everything he does because of that ;)

Damn you Ebert, damn you. One day, you'll cry 'rosebud' whilst playing a videogame on your deathbed!

Ebert is the best film critic out there. He tries to straddle the line between self-important snobby critics and the film-going public. I actually listen to his views, and agree with most of them. I'm glad he will remain a part of the critical community and I wish there were more out there like him.

I was hoping this article was about him returning to his TV show. In my fantasy Ebert has developed a super voice, due to a radical experiment by a equally radical surgeon. He returns to the show and uses his new super Voice to blast the skin from Roepers bones for letting the show go to the $hitter... and just being a moron in general. (I'll admit in some ways that was a thinly veiled Dune [the movie] reference. Not a proud moment, but a moment nonetheless.)

He was always better in print than in person (television-wise). So maybe NOW IS A GOOD TIME to change the "At the Movies with Ebert and Roeper" to "The Roeper Report"????

I just hope he spends some time watching retroactively with films he missed reviewing during his abscence. Cuz I'd really like to know his take on Transformers... or maybe he's been through too much an ordeal already...

Good for him. Man, it's been years now since he was able to speak... that would be gnarly...

Hope your recovery continues Rog.

Whenever I look at the critic reviews on the Tomato meter the first one I look for is Ebert. Chances are if 98% goes against his view whether he likes or dislikes a movie, he's usually right.

But I liked Brazil...
Anyway I'm glad to see him recovering, and I hope he can eventually return to his show.

Ebert's a critic whose writing I enjoy, even when I disagree with him completely. But he tends to have valid reasons for his opinions, and sometimes recommends seeing films that he doesn't necessarily care for (like LIFE AQUATIC).

I miss his perspective when it comes to deciding what to see. He's the best and always will be.
