America Gets Spaced!
Region 1 denizens should mark their calendars for July 22 (and set aside about five Alexander Hamiltons) for the North American debut of the UK smash sitcom Spaced. Created by Simon Pegg and Jessica Hynes (nee Stevenson) -- and directed by Edgar Wright -- the surreal pop culture-referencing television show will finally make it to our shores in a 3-disc edition. Bonus material will include a 2007 cast reunion, an Homage-O-Meter that tracks each pop culture reference as it happens, and a commentary by Wright, Pegg, Hynes, and celeb-hipster buddies Quentin Tarantino, Kevin Smith, Bill Hader, Matt Stone, Patton Oswalt, and Diablo Cody.
Meanwhile, McG Gets De-Spaced...
...and if you're a fan of Spaced, Edgar Wright, and Simon Pegg, then perhaps you'll be happy to hear that the planned American remake of the show is now D.O.A., according to industry pundit Nikki Finke. Why is that good, you ask? Mostly because the folks behind the re-do, first announced last October, were plotting the series without any involvement by its creators. Also, it had Charlie's Angels/Terminator 4 director McG at the helm -- leading Wright to blog-dub the project McSpaced. Death to McSpaced!
Criterion Goes Blu-Ray
In more highbrow news, the cineastes at the Criterion Collection announced last week that Criterion will be going Blu-ray this fall! They promise "glorious high-definition picture and sound, all the supplemental content of the DVD releases" -- and best of all -- "they will be priced to match our standard-def editions." Because it's not like standard Criterion releases come on the cheap. The first batch of Blu-ray Criterion releases will include Bottle Rocket, Chungking Express, The Last Emperor, Gimme Shelter, Contempt, and The 400 Blows. Click for full titles.
Also announced this week
-- Early box art reveals that a sneak peek of the teenage vampire romance Twilight will appear on Summit Entertainment's DVD release of Penelope, starring Christina Ricci. A fable about a pig-nosed girl who finds romance and a first look at the star-crossed love between a high schooler and a handsome bloodsucker? Guys, try to contain yourselves. On shelves July 15.
-- Could the National Lampoon brand thrive again, after years of being licensed out to drastically unfunny films like Dorm Daze and Golf Punks? We shall see this summer, when the first National Lampoon movie to be produced by National Lampoon in 19 years comes to DVD: National Lampoon's Bag Boy. (It's about competitive grocery bagging. Which reminds us of a funny episode of 10 Items or Less...wonder when that will hit DVD?) Also on shelves July 15.
--Lastly, the Washington Post calls a quietly brewing problem to attention regarding our troops overseas and home video entertainment. Remember to pick up legit adult videos when sending your care packages!

![]() on May 13 2008 03:44 AM I never really liked these DVDs that advertise the next installment in the series. Sure it's cool to see little sneak peeks of Indiana Jones and the Crystal Skull now, but what happens when you want to show your children Indiana Jones movies 10 or so years from now? "Hey guys keep your eyes open for Indiana Jones and the Crystal Skull coming out May 2008!" No thanks. I'd rather just buy all four and not be pestered by advertisements every time I want to watch Indiana Jones. (Reply to this) |

on May 13 2008 05:57 AM urgh...i guess its national Wh3re Day, good lord...National Lampoon releasing another sh3t comedy and a Lucas series with a special edition release? only thing missing is a Lord of the Rings collectible dvd boxed set. next up...Indiana Jones boxed set, extended edition. then directors cut, then collectible tin with lego indiana jones, then collectible box set, then a set including a one of a kind limited edition replica indy hat. this, before the 4th gets released on dvd. then? oh yeah...they do all the sets over...again. national lampoon is utter garbage nowadays, anything that has their name is no doubt a horrible comedy. dorm daze was the only remotely entertaining flick i've seen from them in a long time, and even that wasn't that decent. the fact that its a Lampoon dvd where there ISN'T t3tties on the front...scares me. if there's no b33bies...there's no reason to watch it. i'd rather rent the special edition, including full cast commentary, of Gigli... on May 13 2008 06:34 AM Disappointing that they chose NOW to RE-release the Indy DVD's (I know, there's new material... But it's pretty thin, I'm sure). Considering they'll probably release the new Indy on Blu Ray in the Fall, along with the others... I just wish they'd do the Blu-Ray with the originals, like, NOW. (Reply to this) |

on May 13 2008 08:12 AM All I want is Master and Commander Blu-ray...oh yes (Reply to this) |
![]() on May 13 2008 09:11 AM I'm just going to keep watching the Indy movies from Netflix and wait until the fourth one comes out on DVD. I can't waste money on the box set now only to have to (want to) buy the box set with the four of them together. (Reply to this) |

on May 13 2008 09:57 AM For the last time, THE LAST CRUSADE IS NOT MISNAMED! The title is referring to the ACTUAL Crusades involving Christian nights, and/or the Arthurian Crusades of legend, NOT INDY'S ADVENTURES! His adventures were never called Crusades! Get it through your thick head, and tell your other "professional" friends who keep screwing this up as well. (Reply to this) |

on May 13 2008 10:21 AM thank you bauerpowerhour for saying what i have been saying to people for years if peopled watched the movie closely they would understand that. (Reply to this) |
![]() on May 13 2008 12:30 PM Ill get The Great Debaters. I already have the Indy set, so I am going to wait til all four of them are together on blu ray to re-buy. (Reply to this) |
![]() on May 13 2008 04:32 PM bauer, it's clear that Spielberg likes his metaphors; if the search for the Holy Grail was also a metaphor for Indy's search for his father/a relationship with his father (which Spielberg himself states in the aforementioned new 3-disc release), then I am CERTAIN that The Last Crusade was meant to also refer to what would seemingly be Indiana Jones' last adventure. Until now. (Reply to this) |
|
on May 13 2008 07:21 PM Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade was named for both the adventure Indy went on in search for the Holy Grail AS WELL AS it being his final big screen adventure. Steven himself said that once the Last Crusade was released. (Reply to this) |

on May 14 2008 09:25 AM In reply to this comment (#1734411) George Lucas is a waste of time. Harrison Ford is the only man who can play Indiana Jones, and Sean Connery was the ideal Dr. Henry Jones. Spielberg is the true master behind these movies, and perhaps if Lucas wasn't such a stubbard old senile fool, he would have let Spielberg advise him on ALL of his film failures. Including the Star Wars prequels. This guy makes me sick. Of course, Lucas' opinion that he is the second coming of Christ will probably never wear off. Get over the ego trip, you trapped-in-your-childhood megalomaniac! (Reply to this) |
![]() on May 14 2008 01:44 PM Oh, becks...just wait til you see what's next in our Indiana Jonesin' series...let's just say, today happens to be George Lucas' birthday! (Reply to this) |
