RT on DVD: The Future of Watchmen, Plus Sleeping Beauty, Touch of Evil Remastered

And did we mention the Zen master of martial arts (and the blues) has returned?

Juicy Watchmen DVD news leads off this week's RT on DVD, as Zack Snyder reveals the future of Watchmen and its spinoff DVD, The Black Freighter. Elsewhere, Hollywood's most powerful studios join forces to block the latest advances in "legal" DVD ripping. And among this week's new releases, we've got a lot to recommend (Sleeping Beauty's 50 Anniversary, Touch of Evil remastered), a few we don't recommend (You Don't Mess With the Zohan, The Happening), and a couple of new titles for those of you with more esoteric tastes (let's just say, Steven Seagal has returned to duty).

1. Zack Snyder Shares More Black Freighter DVD Plans

At a recent event for the press in which Zack Snyder wowed a room of journalists with 25 minutes of Watchmen and revealed that his current cut was running just under three hours (!), he also spoke a bit about Tales of the Black Freighter, a short film accompaniment to Watchmen that will appear on its eventual DVD release.

The Black Freighter storyline, a meta tale-within-a-tale about a castaway and a ghost ship, will appear as a standalone release on DVD five days after the film debuts in theaters next March. But Snyder and Warner Bros. eventually plan to integrate it into a future home video cut of the film itself, along with the mockumentary Under the Hood, which will be released as a supplement on the Black Freighter DVD.

"Those two pieces will be on there," Snyder told IGN Movies, "a tell-all documentary that talks about what's in the book, interviews with different characters, and then The Black Freighter. And then hopefully later on we're hoping for a Watchmen movie that has the Black Freighter in it."

What this means for Watchmen fans is that, as you may have suspected, you might opt to wait for an ultimate special edition of Watchmen that includes the Black Freighter/Under the Hood extras within the film itself. Then again, that home video release is pretty far away. Can you ignore the itch to snatch up Black Freighter come March?

I'll be definitely renting The Visitor tomorrow, I recommend renting Paranoid Park it is really good. Zohan was enjoyable I recommend it as a rental. I love the WATCHMEN dvd news, and I'm sure I wont be able to stop myself from buying all the dvds they release. Maybe I will pick up 30 Rock this week.

They said "just under" 3 hours. That means about 170 minutes, no less than 160 minutes. Any less than 160 minutes, and Zack Snyder would have said, "Over 2-and-a-half hours." So fear not. Be grateful, my friend! Before I knew anything about "Watchmen", and I heard that it'd be Zack Snyder's next movie, I was seriously expecting a normal comic-book runtime of about 2 hours. "Just under 3 hours" means that we're a very lucky audience indeed.

Sweet! I was wondering how they'd get the Black Freighter into the movie; it would make a theatrical release drag, but I'm glad to see it'll be included in the DVD!

Also... are you *sure* Sleeping Beauty was the last completely hand-drawn Disney Cartoon? I mean, it was 1959; they didn't exactly have computer animation back then, so how else would it be done other than by hand??

I believe every single cel in Sleeping Beauty was hand painted, but after that they used Xeroxing to replicate cels.

Is Seagal Buddhist or Shinto?

But, does it really matter? In heaven, every week will be a new release by Steven Seagal.

I had a dream, where Steven Seagal was talking to me, and then he turned into Jen Yamato. I needed to tell her about the new Seagal release, but couldn't, because there was no message thread for the Review Revue!

I have been having this dream for weeks... and now it comes to me during waking hours and replaces "reality." Very serene.

I'm so psyched about this movie. I really hope it does the book justice.

Watchmen has the potential to be the greatest movie ever. God, I hope it's as good as it should be.

a two hour 45 minute watchmen is close enough to three hours for me. sure some stuff will be left out but its obviously not going to be an order of the phoenix.

Simpsons Season 10 was where I stopped. Last season I really wanted. There's no episodes after 10 that'll miss not seeing. Though I'll definitely be getting Psycho, particularly for this festive month.

By far this week's best bets on DVD!!!

Jen, Eyvind Earle, one of the great artists of the last 100 years, was in charge of Sleeping Beauty. He hand painted all of the backgrounds. Because of that, it took much longer to produce than usual for a Disney film.

AR, fully agree with the simpsons season stoppage. i think they ran out of ideas or something because i used to watch it all the time then...boom, years later i'm like "wow, that show is STILL on and new episodes?" just stopped being funny. the one and only episode i've seen in recent years that was funny was That 90's Show.

the "don't copy dvd" piece was nice, love hearing studios b3tch about something that they think is costing them money. sorry but, unless you sell me a dvd for 5 bucks...i ain't buyin it. stop charging a retarded amount for ONE movie. tv shows, ok...i get the price(cept for hbo stuff). why pay 20-30 bucks for a new dvd when you can get an entire month(or more) worth of unlimited rentals? just go to a blockbuster and rent as many as you want for a flat fee. ya might have to wait a week or two for it to be in stock but, woopity doo. it's way more cost efficient.

Shyamalan is the master of one hit wonder. The Happening merely shows that he's out of ideas and decided to throw his views on the environment into the plot of every other horror flick to make some cash so he can further ruin American cinema.

Point taken, tomwaitsjr! I'm not sure if we'll go back to putting the Review Revue in an article (seems much faster for a reader to click straight to the video) but I think video commenting might be in our near future...so hold tight!

Detrs, thanks for adding to the Sleeping Beauty discussion. I always loved SB a little more than some of the other Disney classics. It's nice to think about all of the craftsmanship and time that went into hand painting every single frame.

Gimy, I agree with you about DVDs being way too costly, but I might argue that to many DVD buyers its the street cred/being able to display their movie tastes on a shelf that makes it worth it. This is probably a smaller percentage of the population than that which would rather rent a movie and return it for far less $, and of course there's no way there's enough of these prestige DVD buyers to keep the physical disc industry going for much longer...just a thought though.

Seeing that the entire issue of Dr. Manhattan's origin story (issue #4) is compressed into 10 minutes with no loss of story, I'm not at all concerned with "only" 3 hours of Watchmen. C'mon March!!!

Lucas sucks now, well since Episode I. Snyder who I don't think is amazing but he is good, I thought 300 and Dawn of the Dead were good B movies but I think WATCHMEN will be his great movie! I mean he has only done 2 flicks, can you really put him on the level of Lucas who simple handedly ruined Star Wars...

GEORGE LUCAS MADE STAR WARS! And yeah he directed it ( and I mean the 1977 orginal) and yeah, Episode I and Episode II were , "meh" but Episode III was gold and he can do to Star Wars what he wants. Even that TERRIBLE "Star Wars: The Clone Wars."
