Cannes 2009: RT's 10 Most Anticipated Movies

We pick our favourites to look out for from the selection.

Cannes 2009

Tetro - Tucked away in festival sidebar Director's Fortnight - director Francis Ford Coppola turned down an Out of Competition slot in the main selection - Tetro stars Vincent Gallo in a tale deeply personal to Coppola. After a cool reaction to his last directorial effort, Youth Without Youth, all eyes are on this film to see if Coppola still has the talent that brought us films like The Godfather and Apocalypse Now.

Inglourious tops my list, with Up a close second. These ones here are in no particular order, obviously.

Great list! I was worried you were going to forget about Thirst, it seems like the commentors here have forgotten about Park Chan-Wook's Oldboy (and I would suggest checking out his other works, he's one of my favorite directors). That, The Imaginarium of Dr Parnassus (yet another one of my favorite directors), and Pulp Fiction are the movies I'm waiting from most on here.

Hmm, when I think of Cannes, it brings to mind independent films. Up, Inglorious Basterds, Dr.Parnassus and Drag Me to Hell are bigger name studio movies. I think all of them look good though. Out of the others, Antichrist and Thirst both seem pretty cool. The rest look like the straight to video movies you only rent because you saw everything else already.

Actually Dr. Parnassus is an independent film no studio will touch it for distribution until the Cannes screening because no one has seen it yet and the story is really out there. The Weinstein Company is practically and indie company so Inglorious Basterds isn't really a big studio movie either.

Universal has a hand in the distribution though, not just the Weinsteins.

That's distribution though, they didn't give money to make the movie, and that's what I always took to be the definition of independent: that a major studio doesn't fund the movie itself.

Actually, Universal footed some of the budget for Basterds.

I'm probably the only one, but I'm really looking forward to Looking for Eric. Not only do I love The Wind that Shakes the Barley I'm also a huge Man U fan. As for Dr. Parnassus Heath Ledger and Johnny Depp sound good, Colin Farrell and Jude Law not so much unless they're playing the douchebag portion of his character then they're perfectly cast. :)

Most of these look pretty good. I have my fingers crossed for Tetro because I want Coppola to have at least one more great movie.

Willem Dafoe never ceases to amaze me. He plays Jesus in one controversial film, and now he's in another called Antichrist. This is why he is one of my favorites!
