I CANNOT EFFIN WAIT TO SEE THIS!...

Sorry, had an all caps moment. I've been waiting for a Hemmingway biopic for quite some time now, gents. I'm hoping it's successful enough to encourage more biopics on great writers. James Baldwin comes to mind.

That's good casting right there. Can't see how this could be bad. Only down point for me about casting Hopkins is it means they're not going to touch on his "A Moveable Feast" years, unless they're going to Parnassus it and have a younger actor play that part. Oh well, I guess The Old Man and the Sea is my second favorite work of his.

I always thought that Russel Crowe would make the perfect Hemmingway, so for that reason I am fairly disappointed. But this may still be a great film.

Hemmingway was just such a cool guy... I mean he went on Safaris and drank a lot. He was a fisherman and would get into fist fights. He boxed Teddy Roosevelt once, too.

And Russel Crowe is a thick-boned, surly guy who also hits people a lot and has been in a bunch of great movies. I think there is a big parallel and I just imagined the two being the same kinda guy.

Anthony Hopkins... I've never heard him not speak in an English accent. Hemmingway died at like 62, so maybe he would be a better age fit for the role. Maybe Crowe could play a younger Hemmingway.

A younger Hemmingway IS RUSSELL CROWE, for sure; Hemmingway actually worked as a bull-fighter in his more chavauntestic (spelling) and macho years. There need to be two Hemmingway films: one with RUSSEL CROWE as "Hemmingway Pre-downfall" and Anthony Hopkins as Hemmingway during the authors' comback with OLD MAN AND THE SEA.

OLD MAN AND THE SEA is the only book that actually brought me to tears reading. OLD MAN AND THE SEA: POWERFUL stuff.

I wonder if it really can be filmed (OLD MAN AND THE SEA) even though it has (with Spencer Tracy and an IMAX [animated version]). Its such a PERSONAL and deeply affecting "experience"

This looks like a fine example of great casting! As an avid salt angler myself, I can see this film doing wonderful things for the sport. It'll be an interesting film either way as Garcia's Lost City was a great piece of Cuban work.

Dont get me wrong, Ham. I get your point and it's totally money. But Hopkins is Hopkins, man. And like you mentioned, he IS playing an older Hemmingway.

If, however, the film spanned over a longer course of his life I would definitely see Crowe in the part. No question.

Call it contrast fodder, but as much as I liked OLD MAN AND THE SEA, the only book that brought me to tears was NATIVE SON by Richard Wright. A close second was Ralph Ellison's INVISIBLE MAN.

Hopkins actually speaks with a Welsh accent, not English. There is a difference. British is technically correct.
