Gordon Franklin Terry Sr writes: on Nov 06 2009 04:46 AM Sounds pretty hip; like FLOWERS FOR ALGERNON by Daniel Keyes (published in 1958 as a short story and in 1966 as a novel) [filmed as CHARLY starring Cliff Robertson] and then again as a Made For TV Movie. Remember: 1. actors don't have to YELL their dialog to entertain the audience. 2. Special Effects don't have "BLOW THE AUDIENCE OUT OF THEIR SEATS" to make a powerful impact on the audience. 3. Jerry Goldsmith said, when scoring a thousand "Indians" chasing a hundred Calvary, he wouldn't "score" the horses hooves hitting the ground or the sky or the sun. Jerry would score the fear within the Calvary and the rage of the Indians or Vice-Versa. 4. Some actors are more charismatic than others. 5. Some Directors, even though they "own the rights," or "are in bed with the studio," or "graduated UCLA," or "graduated Harvard University." Are BAD Directors. 7. An Executive bragged about his graduating from IVY LEAGUE and how he knew intrinsically "what worked" and "what didn't work;" the same smarty-pants-wonder-boy wound-up having a number of shows CANCELED in mid-season. Just because someone SAYS they make good decisions and SAYS they know what's best and what "sucks" DOESN'T MEAN THEY KNOW what's good . . . and sometimes the best projects are "screwed-up" by know-it-all "schmoozing" executives . . . who brag about graduating from so-and-so with such-and-such a degree and works-out in the gym with so-and-so. The Gated-Community of The Hollywood Social Structure (The Hollywood "Ecosystem" OR The Hollywood EGO-system). EXCLUDES the best talent most times. and then we're left with directors who think that ordering actors to yell all the dialog is good directing and makes good acting. (Reply to this) |
