Rotten Tomatoes Is Joining Forces With Flixster!

Two great tastes that taste great together!

In the tradition of great partnerships like Batman & Robin, Michael Jordan & Scottie Pippen, and peanut butter & chocolate, we are very pleased to announce that Rotten Tomatoes is merging with Flixster. Think of it as a surprise present for movie fans that's been hiding under the Christmas tree until today.

Rest assured that RT will continue to be the essential place for critical reaction and analysis, but now we'll just be able to reach more people. We're still going to publish articles and interviews, and we're still going to make sure that we've got as many reviews from leading critics as we can find.

Ultimately, the combination of Flixster and Rotten Tomatoes aims to be the most comprehensive movie information source, both for users on our sites and on other platforms such as Facebook. To do that, we'll be using a database of more than 250,000 movies, 2.3 billion user reviews, 500,000 critic reviews, more than 20,000 trailers and videos, Tomatometer and Flixster Scores, movie news and interviews, and showtimes and ticket information. And don't be surprised to see new features in the future.

Rotten Tomatoes was acquired, not vice versa. So don't be surprised to see some changes here (possibly not for the better).

"whiskeyriver writes:Rotten Tomatoes was acquired, not vice versa."

More like traded than acquired.

It looks to me like RT benefits by being placed into proximity with another 20M people/month who are interested in movies. And (having just visited flixster for the first time) it looks like flixster users will have access to content (on RT) that's actually worth reading.

Also, I'm glad to see everybody at RT is keeping their jobs. Those are the people who have the most to fear from change!

There is one change I'd like to see at RT as a result of this merger. Heck it wouldn't bother me if this changed before the merger. My avatar hasn't worked in over a year. Reckon somebody could fix it? Hah, or maybe I'll have to wait to flixster it. :)

Does it say more about Flixster or more about me that, although "Flixster Inc., [is] producer of the world's largest online movie community", I've never even heard of the damn thing?

Netflix and RT already are partners, and Flixster is a huge partner with Netflix, so this isn't terribly surprising.

SELL-OUTS.

I wonder if Flixter will try to "embed" something in my browser.

Hope there aren't too many changes. I liked Rotten Tomatoes better in the old days.

Less control by Rupert.

Less control by Rupert means exclusive control by Flixter.

Are there any viable alternatives to this new conglomerate? If not, prepare for a Flixter makeover.

I cant wait for honkeylover45 and largebutt332 to become top critics. Or hell, if the tomatometer was open to the public. We'd become... IMDb.

I for one dont welcome our new Flixter overlords.

Good. Maybe RT will now have the resources to develop THEIR OWN iPhone app.... Many months ago, RT sent a "Cease and Desist" to the developer of a perfectly good and functional iPhone app; now it just uses Metacritic instead of RT. Now, I don't mind his getting a C&D...as long as RT was working on their own! It seems they haven't been. WTF?

Hrm....

This could be good or the end of RT. I lean towards good. RT is too valuable to screw up and the new owners should know this. RT survived IGN without looking like the IGN movie section (a cluttered mess). Hopefully it will survive this.

How could it actually help? RT is excellent, but very narrowly focused. If RT remains pretty much unchanged in look and feel and its utility doesn't suffer, the addition of a better movie database could help the site. Click on a movie and see the RT page as it is now with tabs for the expanded content? Sounds fantastic. This isn't a disaster unless Flixster wants to make it one and they'd be fools to do so. If what people come to RT for is taken away or buried, today is a sad day, but so long as any shanges don't distract from RT's main purpose, all is good.

Yes, I'm babbling, but only because I am trying really hard to see something positive in this news.

Don't let Flixter order you around, RT! Maintain your integrity!

I've been using Movie Review Query Engine lately. MRQE.com. They have cool graphs for each film as well as a twitter site I think they also own called flicktweets.com. Just something different to look at.

Some guy - the Tomatometer already IS open to the public... in the form of the Community Tomatometer. But as far as honkeylover45 and largebutt332 becoming Top Critics, or even Tomatometer critics for that matter, well, it takes more than an awesome username to earn that title, and we have no plans to change that.

And to clarify, RT and Flixster will still operate as two separate websites. You won't be seeing us changing our name to Rotten Flixmatoes or Flixster Tomatoes. We fully intend to maintain our integrity, because we know you all love us just the way we are!

Oh dear. Rotten Tomatoes exemplifies everything that flixster ISN'T.
Don't get me wrong, I'm not a movie snob and I know there are plenty of people who view films as simple entertainment but... RT is a film site for people who respect films, not just rate them willy nilly.
Geez how do I say this without insulting a lot of people?

Let me put it this way, Flixster is full of people who rate things either 1/10 and 10/10 without expressing their opinion, it's where people complain about The Godfather and The Lord of the Rings having too much talking. THAT sort of movie site.

I've been here a long long time...& honestly...change always brings gripes...but every now & then...something good comes from change...& as long as the overall vibe of Rotten T does'nt change...I'm all good with it...I guess...I think...ah to hell with it...I'm terrified of change. Heh heh heh.
