another one of Steven Speilberg's racist escapades:
Spielberg doesn't hire any blacks in his films and then the NAACP goes after him and Spielberg directs THE COLOR PURPLE with QUINCY JONES which featured a "black only" cast.

then, there weren't any blacks in JURASSIC PARK and Steven Speilberg stuck SAM JACKSON in a role at the last minute and (notice) the Sam Jackson character is confined to the control room.

Steven Sopeilberg comes under-fire again by the NAACP (National Association for the Advancement of Colored People) and directs AMISTAD with, again, a "black only" cast (except for Matthew Machogny and Anthony Hopkins).

I'm not sure if framing Steven Speilberg as a segregationist/racist is accurate HOWEVER
no blacks in NIGHT GALLERY
no blacks in DUEL
no blacks in SUGARLAND EXPRESS
no blacks in JAWS
no blacks in CLOSE ENCOUNTERS OF THE THIRD KIND
no blacks in 1941
no blacks in RAIDERS OF THE LOST ARK
the blacks (appearing with toilet paper on mischief night) were cut from ET THE EXTRATERRESTRIAL

only blacks in THE COLOR PURPLE
no blacks in EMPIRE OF THE SUN
. . . the "no blacks 'policy' in SPIELBERG movies" can go on forever.
no blacks in WAR OF THE WORLDS

Steven Spielberg is "the best director in Hollywood" (and he's a true inspiration and terrific filmmaker) but Spielberg consistently demonstrates a pattern of discrimination in his films.

a STEVEN SPIELBERG/MARTIN LUTHER KING, Jr. movie seems like another "black stunt" on Spielberg's account.

again STEVEN SPIELBERG is "the best director in Hollywood" in the sense that Spielberg can communicate any emotion to every audience in the world
yet Spielberg has a STRIKING PATTERN of not hiring blacks for several pictures and then sudden;y making a "Pro-black" picture.

its an ambivalent feeling I hold for Steven Spielberg since I regard him so highly, yet his hiring-pattern of black actors is "offensive" to me.

I saw a couple of black people on the crowd scenes of Jaws, E.T., and War of the Worlds. Always a fun to read your post.

And don't forget that Spielberg also had a guy in yellowface in Raiders of the Lost Ark. Don't just paint Spielberg's (and/or Hollywood's) racist casting as a black and white issue.

Spielberg couldn't have found some token Asian or Asian-American guy to play a meaningless role in Raiders? Instead, he took one of the white guys who was part of the production and put him in yellowface, with prosthetics giving him "slanty" eyes?

I think it depends on how you were brought up and where. I remember seeing the first black guy ever when I was in my teens. I grew up in a white community, but don't consider myself anymore racist than the next man. The massive influx of colour and cred into my area in the last 20 years has changed the face of my community. I don't know Spielbergs background but if your accusing him of being a racist then surely Spike Lee is a racist too? He's black, grew up in a black community and mostly associates himself with black friends. All his films are predominately written for black actors.

I have no issue with Spielberg using white actors or black actors. If he wants to do a film using an entirely black cast with a single white guy or visa versa, so what!

Gordon - The Colour Purple and Amistad with Black Actors only...really?

NAACP will find things that arn't necessarily racist. I can thing of a few organisation.. *cough PETA.. who've used celebrites to bring attention to themselves. I have no objection to their goals, just the manner in which they conduct themselves, and Spielberg is an easy target.

@ Gordo-

Speilberg didn't have any eskimos in any of said movies. He's obviously racists towards the good people of Alaska, too!

Sam Jackson confined to the control room in Jurassic Park? Not true. His severed arm appears outside of the control room, after a presumed encounter with a velociraptor.

And c'mon, we all know black people can't use computers!

To be fair, I think I understand what Gordon is getting at. Spielberg has never cast any minorities in leads in his movies, unless it was absolutely necessary (The Lost World is the only movie I can think of where he cast a non-white actor in a lead role, ok, and the temple doom, but the less we remember of shortround the better). It does strike me odd that Spielberg, a filmmaker who has benefited greatly from telling stories rooted in African culture, has never once gone out of his way to cast a person of said decent in one of his more mainstream pictures.

@ FuryUK

Where the hell do you hail from? Whitey Mcwhiteville? You didn't see a black person until you were in you're teens? Maybe I'm just fortunate to live in a place diverse enough where we don't characterize people by ethnicity.

Tmurph824 accusations of retardation are ironic, since The Shining, Full Metal Jacket, Dr. Strangelove, and Spartacus all have black people in significant roles.

Please don't bring up Stanley Kubrick. The man directed high budget porn films. Spielberg actually makes decent films.

As for a MLK biopic I think it sounds cool. I liked Invictus and this sounds like it could be good also.

Spielberg's the wrong director for this movie. While I do like some of his movies, he has a big tendency to get all sappy and sentimental, or too heavy-handed/simplistic with messages.

Most likely, this movie will be the PG-rated, watered-down, King family-supported "I Have a Dream" version of MLK that we see in the McDonald's commercials.

People need to know that there was more to MLK and his ideology than that one speech.

He wasn't exactly a hero during his time, and many millions of people hated him in America. But now? Like Bob Marley, he's been carefully whittled down, his edges worn away and made soft for mainstream (i.e., white) consumption. I don't want the "Blind Side" version of MLK and racism in America.

At the same time, I don't want some Oliver Stone-like, scandal-driven biopic either.

I want an honest portrayal of the man. I guess I'll just have to watch documentaries. Even a biased documentary can't hide everything.

I honestly can't think of many, if any, Hollywood biopics that were completely true to the subject.

MLK - who could play him? Wow. Has to be Denzel Washington. Only actor with the chops and true sense of history. Sorry Will Smith. Here's an unconventional choice: what about Common? He was decent in Smokin' Aces and Terminator Salvation. I think he can act. It would be an enormous gamble though.

@Pagliacci, honestly, I think they should get an unknown actor who at least resembles MLK slightly, but, most importantly, captures his essence.

In previous MLK movies/portrayals, I've mostly seen actors who may have resembled him, but didn't capture his essence.

I doubt Denzel Washington will be chosen for this role, especially since he played Malcolm X, in a highly underrated movie, btw.

I think it's going to be hard to choose the right actor among known names, for this role.

You know, I'm SO SICK of African-American complaints. It's getting seriously old & tedious. So, Spielberg hasn't put any main black characters in most of his films. Who gives a CRAP! Tyler Perry & Spike Lee (who are truly racist) don't hardly ever have whites in there films but that's okay (sarcasm). Come on! This country has become so one-sided simply because we can't offend the blacks because that's racist (sarcasm). Get real. There can be all black films (& that's okay [sarcasm]) but there can't be no all white films. It's just absurd. Seriously, is this country getting this bad that everything has to have diversity in it especially if it's a "white" film? It's just become a joke. I truly believe if there is going to be a World War 3, it's going to be the war of the ethnics. All signs are pointing too it. I don't know when it will happen but man, you can just see it happening especially the way things are today.

As far as MLK? MLK wasn't truly a "great" man by any means. The only reason why most people only know him for his speech is because that's all he was truly was good for. He was a racist himself. The only reason why he has a holiday & a street named after him in every state is because the black community & his wife wouldn't shut the hell up about it if it didn't happen. Does he truly deserve a holiday & a street named after him? Personally, No. Hell, most the white community could careless about MLK as he didn't do anything for the whites.

I'm not a racist by any means but I'm so absolutely sick of hearing about the black community's b*tchfest on anything & everything. It's a community that thinks everything should be handed to them. If you hate it here that much? Then leave!

No dude, you are just looking into wrong. You are just one of the prime examples of what's wrong with this country. I didn't say anything discriminatory & nothing of any significants of any true racism. What I said, is what it is man. That's the problem with today's world is no one wants to say it like it is. If you can't take the time to explain your situation about me then you have no argument. I know I'm not a racist. I just say it like it is whether you like it or not. If you can't see any of this then you have pure blinded ignorance.

You're taking this racial thing a little to seriously!!! I mean the same argument can be said about not enough East Indians, Chinese, Japanese, Russian, American Indians, Africans, Italians, Mexicans, Koreans etc... in alot of Spielberg films and even if there were any, then they might've been subtle roles!! ( At least he's made a couple of movies about African Americans and an upcoming third when most other ethnic groups are getting shafted!)

That if it's true about what you're are saying about the NAACP complaining about Spielberg not having enough African Americans in his films MEANS that they have nothing better to do with there lives except b-tch about it when most other ethnic groups have not- NAACP should just get over it!
